I have a basement similar to yours, we haven't done anything to the paneling or the drop ceiling because we had other priorities but I would ask what you have under that carpet? My basement has asbestos tiles so you might doublecheck that before tearing anything out and ending up with a big bill for asbestos removal...

Here is the bedroom before and afters....I still have the closet doors to paint yet....they are primed as of 2 days ago but need to spend the time to paint out nicely. I think I should buy a spray gun to make my life easier:)

All the wall panels are custom for this project. They have a plain slice maple veneer in a slip match pattern which was selected from a sustainable harvested tree at a veneer house. Then the veneer was sent to a panel manufacture to be placed on a composite wood substrate. Once that is completed it is sent off to the mill-worker to fabricate the actual panels from approved set of drawings by the Architect. All the veneers align form panel to panel as specified by the architect. To achieve these types of results it is highly recommended to have an architect involved who understands the complexities associated with this type of project.
