Putting the dining room to work is a splendid idea, but I'm not attracted to the clutter. Curtains that draw over bookcases make sense to me. The Junior Symphony Show Home in Denver once featured a bedroom that had once been a library. The designer hung sheer flat panels from the ceiling that were pulled and positioned by rods. I think that idea would help some of these rooms to look less like storage when being used as an office.

I'm also a big fan of using tall table lamps on dining tables instead of chandeliers. This way a table can be pushed against a wall to make more office room and the lighting moves with it. It seems that chandelier placement is initially dictated by table placement, but then the table becomes a slave to it.

this is a great idea!

our formal dining room has become my husband's art and music studio. he paints and plays guitar, and had been considering building a small studio in the yard--if we could even have gotten permits for that--until one day i had a brainstorm and said, why not put the dining room table (6 feet opens to 9 feet--when we gather, there are 16 of us counting our kids, spouses and grandkids) in the over-sized and under-used great room?

it looks like the dining room set always belonged there, we've filled wasted space and emptied a little used room (we now eat at the dining room table every day instead of in front of the TV) and he has a new art studio with south-facing windows, the juke box, rock posters on the walls, a giant easel, and his painting supplies! (plus we still have a formal living room for overflow)

unexpected bonus--clearing out the dining room table made a huge open area in the middle of the room where the grandkids love to play, and listen to their music, and they're not underfoot! (it looks they will also be inspired to do more drawing/painting!)

we couldn't be more pleased!
