I agree with the readers who mentioned loving the sounds of a happy family gathered in the home. However, my time for that life is over. I am widowed and live alone in a small apartment in a big city. What makes me happy here? The gorgeous skyline view, the contemporary new furnishings, knowing I took with me only the things I loved best, owning nothing I don't love, having a guest room and guest bathroom that makes it easy for friends and grandchildren to stay over, and call me crazy....I love the city sounds, horns beeping, children upstairs running across the floors....It makes me feel less alone. Oh, but I do have a summer place on the water where the children and grandchildren visit often, make a huge mess with their toys and wet, sandy towels, and the BBQ smells remind me of the happier times raising my family. Then comes the fall...and my neat apartment appears again until next summer.

We're going to re-insulate the attic space and replace the roof. It's not glamorous and it's expensive. Gee, I hope it makes me happy enough that I won't run to the bedroom and collapse in a pile of woe due to the lack of new hardwood floors and the sudden inexplicable mess and disarray that apparently appear when you don't do interior remodeling. How will we go on? ;)

Waking to the pitter patter of rain on the deck. Knowing this peaceful time will soon be followed by sunshine and mountain valley views in Boone NC.

Sunlight through big windows, being surrounded by nature - both inside and out, no clutter, a practical kitchen, lots of wood (walnut, cedar, pine, teak), and white walls to complement wood and stone architectural features. One floor living with a bonus tower or loft with windows affording a 360 degree view of my surroundings. Most of all - being surrounded by my dogs and family, with all their dogs. And a lake location is the ultimate. I will be missing this view for the first time this summer. I guess I will have to hug my dogs tighter, but the memories remain.
