Just new to Houzz.com
Wanted to say there is another option to traditional swimming pool paints and plaster/cementitious surfaces. ecoFinish pool finishes is a pneumatically applied thermal plastic and 100% eco friendly alternative to traditional swimming pool finish options. Lux spa feel and designed for concrete/cementitious, fiberglass, steel, aluminum and hybrids. Colour continuity throughout for hybrids with various surfaces.

Zero VOCs and only requires a two person crew to install. 10 designer colours are available + custom colours upon request. Best pool finish option to enter the marketplace in last twenty years. Commercial and Residential; new build and/or renovations to existing pools (in situ) and spas indoor/outdoor.

Finally there is such a thing as a worry free finish.

We live in upstate ny and have a 20 x 50 in ground salt pool with a vinyl lining and an electric cover. The cover helps prevent evaporation and keeps the pool very warm on sunny days when the nights can be cool. We very rarely use our gas heater, and investigated replacing the gas heater with a heat pump, but were told that they are very slow and very noisy. Any thoughts on that would be welcome. Our biggest challenge is that the prior owners inexplicably designed the pool with no ladder and no steps. The electric cover has made the addition of a ladder impossible, so we are told. Any thoughts about drop–in steps or some way to retrofit the pool with steps? Thanks.

I love all of these ideas to add edibles to your garden. I will be working on being creative this spring. I saw another idea recently where they had taken lengths of gutters and capped the ends and hung them from the exterior wall of the garden shed. Planted with varieties of lettuces it looked marvelous!

My husband and I are new at keeping backyard chickens. We recently finished our coop. I wanted it to be Houzz-worthy, so we went the extra mile. I named it Chykkindor--think Gryffindor--and painted a crest to go with it as well. My only regret is not making the run larger. That can be our next project!

Just to answer a few questions and comment about the chicken tractor and the A-frame pen, as it is mine. I wanted my chickens to be able to fertilize and scratch the ground as chickens love to do. Wire on the bottom of the A-frame would make them totally caged and I wanted them to be as close to free-range chickens as possible. As for dogs or such digging under, I have 7 dogs that were interested in the chickens until I gave them the eye and showed them the broom (I would never hit them!). They got the point and never seemed interested after that. The A-frame is made of 1X4's and hardware cloth and it is so heavy I can't move it without the use of the lawnmower. Before I locked them in their house at night, a rat got one of the chickens. After that happened, I close them in at night and let them out in the morning. I haven't lost any since then. The house is totally lined with hardware cloth and there are two layers of hardware cloth on the floor, 4" apart, so critters can't grab them from the bottom. It works well for my chickens.

We have a peach tree in our back yard which gives fruit once every few years. We've enjoyed only one delicious and abundant harvest in the 9 years we've lived here because of the squirrels. The squirrels are a thorn in my side and we've tried everything to keep them away. They strip the fruit before it's even ripe. Pardon the rant. Stupid squirrels.

@skyval: Sometimes, rather than making a veggie-only front yard in typical veggie-box layout it better to just sneak in the edibles in an ornamental way. Voila! The blended garden is the perfect solution. (Sometimes an end-run is less work than a face-to-face confrontation when it comes to a difference of opinion. And if it's a win-win solution, who is there to complain? Get your veg on and make it beautiful!)

Does anyone know how you can grow vining plants in smaller spaces. Will a squash work on a tomato cage in a large pot? I like the picture of the watermelon under the hollyhocks. I love hollyhocks & I plan to put some out soon. Any other ideas for watermelon & pumpkins? Can their vines be loosely wound around something circular like a birdbath or tree?

I have a decent sized plot of land, but I also have a large yellow lab who likes to pee on anything higher than ground level and lay on anything that has even a small amount of bare dirt. I'm trying to plan smaller beds & in pots so I have less space to guard from him. Usually sticks struck in the ground keep him from laying on my flower beds. I also always leave him a bare spot at the end (with a big trellis separating him from any plants) so he can lay in the dirt. Raised boxes may be a solution in the future, but I just don't have time to get them ready this year.

Has anyone concerned about heavy metals in edibles actually tested edibles grown in these conditions to see if plants absorb or ignore heavy metals? Heavy metals are all over the Earth's crust, are "natural," and so far we and the plants have survived and thrived. Some plants may actually deconstruct compounds in the soil. Other plants thrive from salt, iron, etc. The only compounds I've seen plants strongly react to is acid rain and weed killer.

@Phillip Williams, if you have any traffic issues in your area, you could go to your city council and provide some of the studies showing that streets with heavy canopies slow down speeders. It's really true, when there are big trees lining the streets, people automatically drive more slowly. Perhaps you could persuade them to give you some financial support to increase public safety?

Having grown up in the country years ago, I admit I don't get what you call farmhouse. Free standing cabinets, yes, shelves, no. Apron sinks, no, porcelain sinks with drainboards, yes. Very old houses might have a fireplace (rare), more likely a stove. Artwork & vintage signs, no, plate racks (European), no, plates or cups and saucers on a rail/shelf, yes. This all doesn't mean I don't like these things, (I do!), only that they really weren't in any farmhouse that I ever saw. I suppose you have to call styles something; it just seems strange.
