My husband is a retired military officer and we have lived in nearly 35 different homes in 46 years of marriage, sharing pretty much the full spectrum of bathroom arrangements except for a genuine outhouse! We're currently in a beautiful Paris apartment that has one tiny shower room and a separate toilet and sink, and are about to leave Europe and return to the States to a newly-purchased home that has a fully-equipped bathroom for each of us. They will both need some renovation, but whatever we do to them, their very separateness, privacy, and autonomy will make them luxurious to us!

Sirsir asked about heating a tub, presumably to keep the water hot. Our last home here in France was in the country, where we installed under floor electric heating under locally-made terracotta floor tiles. We put an old, deep, cast-iron tub, on its original feet, in this bathroom, and surrounded it with a built-in covered with ceramic tile. This probably helped to trap the heat a little from the floor. The tub would be warm in winter even before the water went into it, and I never felt that the water cooled off before I was ready to get out. I will say, however, that this was a short and deep tub, that the local French call a "Sabot". Perhaps this will give you an option for keeping your tub water hot....
