Great article! We just planted our first Ruby Vase Ironwood and are looking forward to watching it settle into its new home. Another great choice for tight spaces is the Slender Silhouette Sweetgum (see photo) - we planted this in 2012 and it is maturing just as we expected!!

Wow, Things change out there fast.........I know where this house is, I used to pass it on my way to Smoke Tree Shopping Center, Ralphs. I do hope this is a second home for these guys, It will be lovely to be there from Oct-April. We lived there year round, and had Solar Panels.......but still it was like Summer would never end and 110F is normal in August, it just is not the place to be, nor do I think it was built that way back in the 50-60's. But I must say what a almost perfect reno for Palm Springs........Trina Turk Pillows, on the Sofa, I have them too, but moved back East.........Can't afford 2 homes. Lucky guy's enjoy it while you can.

My mom is INCREDIBLY inventive and would make me a bedroom out of the most interesting spaces. We moved a lot so there were a bunch of versions of loft beds and loft bedrooms. From that experience I am a killer packer!

One thing I've noticed about the homes on Houzz, and those in the advice forums is that people are afraid to make their homes some place they can be comfortable in such as having a favorite chair to watch TV in. I would be interested to know how many people have renovated their homes so they could be featured on here, only to discover that they're afaid to 'live' in them for fear of mussing them up. My mother's home is a show place, and I've never been comfortable in it.

In regards to doors, you want something wide enough to get furniture through, but more importantly, a gurney should you need to call 911 for a heart attack or stroke.

Lastly, does anyone with a $1,000 budget actually hire a designer? If so, the fee alone would leave them with little to do anything on.

Second comment because I am addicted to this article with Mr. Woods flat. This is THE BEST I have seen on Houzz . Every time I look, I discover another detail. Tonight the curved door posts. Oh, I wish I could buy this flat when Mr. Woods is ready for another sandbox. A girl can dream, yes ?

Living here in Los Angeles where everything seems to be either mid century Modern or Hollywood glam, I always look to Scot's designs and furnishings to give me that "peaceful" feeling. He's actually one of the only designers I follow on Pinterest. His style is timeless and masculine. Check out pictures of his place during Christmas/holidays--tartan never looked better!
