The best sofas are cruelty-free and do not involve plucking feathers from sentient beings.

My bike (bikes) were part of my decor for about a decade. Other people parked their fancy-schamcy cars in the lot. I parked my fancy-smanchy bike in the dining area.

Cool place. The article mentions rainy Seattle, which averages 37 inches per year. Compare that with Mobile, Alabama, which averages 65 inches per year. I always think it's funny how Seattle is known to be so rainy.

Summer Living: How to Welcome Weekend Guests

We have a lake home with a different set of guest weekly. Although we love sharing our home with friends and family it can be exhausting. Many of the above suggestions have been put in place and it is nice for the guest. But changing the linen on 12 beds gets real old. I hesitantly stole an idea from a lake neighbor and it has really reduced some of the stress. All we ask of our guest is to make their own bed and then strip it when their visit is over. Then all I have to do is wash and fold and place the linens on the bed for the next guest. I have found that our friends love doing this and feel less of a burden and more "part of the family"

I love having guests but get exhausted running my own life and 'entertaining' the guests. One thing I do that helps a ton is ask week-long guests to plan and execute a couple of the meals. I always do this ahead of their visit so they can bring a favorite recipe. This way, I don't feel like I'm running a bed and breakfast, I get some down time too, and the guests feel like they are making a contribution. This summer, I'm also scheduling dinner at the local food-truck round up and some picnic lunches at the beach. I hate feeling like I need a vacation after guests are gone!

Our recently constructed mountain home has seen guests at least two weekends a month this year. I have come to the conclusion that our set of friends really likes being responsible for one of the dinners, usually Saturday night. This weekend's guests are bringing and making Margarita Shrimp. Yum. It's a treat for me to not have to worry about the part of the weekend menu. I sit back and relax and the visitors feel as if they are contributing. As for Friday night arrivals, I lay out "noshing" items and the beverage fridge is stocked so once they drop their bags, the weekend begins. Sometimes the noshing menu is so substantial, we end up passing on what I pre-prepared for dinner, and we go straight to dessert and a night cap.
