We had a laminate slate counter in our last kitchen and I loved it with white painted cabinets, black granite sink and copper accents. Laminate will always be my counter top because the choices are endless and they are surprisingly durable. Who chops without a cutting board? And how hard is it to lay a hot pad, hot plate or cutting board down for scorching hot pots and pans? Saying all of that, we looked at a home for sale and the owners laid large, marble tile on their counters, with a very narrow grout lines. It was beautiful, DIY installed, and tons cheaper. I filed that one away for future use.

Whenever I see any kind of tile on counter tops, I cringe. I am a microbiologist and the grout lines on tile are quite possibly full of more bacteria than you would find in a bathroom toilet. Unless you take a toothbrush and scrub out the grout lines with bleach daily it's filthy. It seems to be very popular but I don't think people are aware of just how dirty it is. Laminate is my choice mostly because it's cheap, it's beautiful (now a days) and easily replaceable if you decide you want something different. It's also one of the most forgiving and durable materials ever. I live in a home that is 30 years old and this year we will be putting in new laminate counters.... this is the first time they've been replaced.
