Contractor Tips: Wise Advice for Laundry Room Design

Thinking ahead when installing or moving a washer and dryer can prevent frustration and damage down the road Full Story

I wish contractors (mostly guys) would read Houzz. My 100+ year old house was completely remodeled when we bought it with a fabulous laundry/pantry: 2 front load washers and 2 dryers. Problem is, the two washers are side by side and the two dryers are side by side and all of the doors open the same way. It's not easy moving wet clothes over the tops of open doors to get to the dryers. Use some common sense gentlemen!

doodle69 -- I just had to laugh reading your comment. They DID use common sense -- it's their focus that created your problem. Contractors are generally focused on keeping construction costs low and the work efficient, so it made very good sense to them to put the plumbing hookups side-by-side, and the dryer vents side-by-side. I run into this all the time as a designer working with contractors on remodels. When I meet with a contractor to figure out anything we need to do, their perspective is generally on what is going to be more cost effective and efficient to build, whereas my focus on functionality and aesthetics may require we go in a direction that will be a little harder to build and take more time (read: cost more money) but in the end, it will be more beautiful and function more smoothly for the client's life. Lest anyone think I am slamming contractors -- once I've explained the design and function goals, my favorite contractors will often suggest alternatives that preserve those goals while being more cost effective to build. It's a nice collaboration.

That said -- I wonder if you could get longer water hoses for one of your washers and a longer vent hose for one of your dryers and swap the two middle ones? You also might check to see if either of your models has the ability for the door direction to be switched. More likely on the dryer than the washer, but it would be worth checking.

This is not painted or stained -- it just had a clear coat applied.

I'm sorry -- this project was done several years ago and the information is archived. Not easy to put my hands on it. It was a HUGE room -- imagine 4 recliners side by side and there was still probably 8 feet to either side of them. The room ends about a foot behind the back row of recliners and the front row is far enough away to enjoy the large movie screen. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your response. Don't suppose I could buy a copy of those shop drawings to save me hours figuring out that sleight of hand? My email is design@pangaea-id.com if you'd like to email me privately about that. I appreciate that it took your expertise to figure it out in the first place and that it would take up your time to hunt up those drawings. I hope you'll consider it. Thank you!
