Rebuild LLC We don't have bugs in Reno; didn't really have them in the California Bay Area. And believe it or not, there's rarely any flying insections in Hawaii either (geckos and tradewinds help). But I'm thinking back to when I grew up in Michigan, mosquitos were terrible at night but I don't remember it ever being a problem during the day. Maybe I'm not remembering. But I guess I am lucky because I wouldn't want to live in a place where there were too many bugs to leave a door/window open for a few hours a day.

AntyHarton I have to take exception to your comments on notorious Irish builders. In my experience the Irish builders who worked on our house were always professional and hard working. The result exceeded our expectations on every front. I think your racist comment could do damage as we are pulling ourselves out of a recession and Irish builders work hard to keep afloat. Shame on you.

North Texas here and "an occasional mosquito" would be a nice change of pace! In the last year we have had (quite literally) hundreds of thousands of grasshoppers in our yard. You couldn't take a step without hitting one. Right now it is what my friend lovingly described as "zombie mutant June bugs" one inch long flying monstrosities with NO navigational skills. Luckily those are (so far) numbering in the hundreds. Black widows, wolf spiders, grass spiders, scorpions, pill bugs, gnats, no-see-ums, mosquitos, wasps, hornets, and honey bees make up my daily repertoire of insects. Larger animals include toads, field mice, squirrels, moles, skunks (!), and coyotes. If I hadn't lived in Germany for three years I never would have believed it was possible to live without screens. I never did figure out where they hid all their bugs . . . probably in Texas!

Sadly, I've found that my homes have looked most awesome when preparing to sell. I think it's a combination of two factors: 1) finally finishing all those little things that you've been meaning to get around to and 2) staging the house for sale (with or without a professional stager). Other things that make sense include:

Decluttering with an eye towards what you need to store v. what you need to let go (give away, sell, toss)

Like a previous poster noted, it's really good to bring all your favorite accent pieces together---to dust, clean, and think about how to re-position/purpose them. I do this every Christmas holiday season and love that the things that I love can be used in creative ways

Deep, deep, deep cleaning--best done by professionals

Window cleaning--depending on your windows, again best done by professionals

Thanks for this article. Someone decided that the easiest way to add a washer and dryer into our house was to put in the freaking entryway. Although I'd love to add an addition to fix this stupidity, right now a barn door seems like a nice way to cover the appliances when company comes over but make them accessible for the rest of the time. Since the dimensions of my home are so strange, I'm sure it'll be a custom job to get them up.

Sorry the bathroom is comprised of three blocks:
a) loo
b) the shower (that you get to by walking past the glass block window and then up into the shower
c) the bath and sink

What if there are no upper cabinets, counter top is flush with window (no back splash whatsoever) and you have to have these required outlets within x feet of the kitchen sink that is facing this beautiful long and tall window? Where can you put the outlets (oh and the bottom cabinets are not an option)?

Timely article. Its good to return to the original idea of house and home. Creating a inviting personal space is fun, but creating a home for living is more important. It is refreshing to read a piece about home as home and not a design show piece.
