Our family cleans/picks up for 12 minutes each night. We set a timer, and stop when it goes off, even if we aren't finished. If we finish before it goes off, even better. 4 people x 12 minutes = Momma being happy.

I just hired a (highly recommended) cleaning company. Although I work full time and never thought I could afford it, it was worth every penny! They will be coming regularly. I'll still have to vacuum and wipe surfaces in between, (big dog, wood burning stove, I cook a lot etc...) but it's a huge incentive to keep it clean. It also frees up time to do jobs that get put off because of cleaning, like wash slip covers, de-clutter, clean out the basement etc. Some great tips here though!

Thanks so much for the article. I grew up, the eldest daughter, working outside on a dairy farm. My younger sister helped mother (who had MS) in the home. I did not learn housekeeping skills until I went away to college when I learned first how to iron. Learning on my own did not always result in the most efficient method. Not too many years ago, I purchased Martha Stewart's "Homekeeping Handbook". It simply covers everything imaginable and is a good reference. One thing I know for sure, housekeeping is not the most important thing in life; so things get messed up and opportunities for fun happen. Take advantage of spending time doing the things you love; in most cases, the housework will wait.

Interesting. I still wonder if the human brain of one individual actually sees color differently from other people. I love a color palette that is easy on the eyes when I am relaxing at home. The tomato red cabinet is nice in a small picture, but I don't think it would be easy on the eyes every day. I love the perspective of this article--break the rules, make your own decorating choices to suit your own tastes and needs in your home.
