Toronto Designers It is not necessary to tile, but it does depend on styling as well. Is it all closed in with glass doors? If so, a tiled ceiling will be very nice. Is it low ceilings? If so, a tiled ceiling will help for maintenance. Is the shower open to the rest of the room? Then I would not tile it.
I personally did not tile my shower that has an 8' ceiling. I wanted to but when the two sides of the tiles that went to the ceiling were not lining up, I didn't. And my ceiling, which sees 2 - 3 showers a day, is holding up just fine. We do use a fan on a timer for at least 10 mins after each shower, which really helps.
