About me:
Houzz Contributor. I am a former magazine editor specializing in travel and design. I just completed my first remodel, turning my crumbling 1941 kitchen into a beauty of grays, whites and natural wood. If I could, I'd sleep on the countertop. That's how much I love it.

10 Beautiful Rooms for Real Kids

Let's get real. Kids have stuff, and they're not always neat, but great decorating doesn't have to be a fantasy Full Story »

Samantha Schoech Yep. As opposed to the "fake" kids that don't really live in the staged rooms usually seen in magazines. I used to edit home stories for shelter magazines and we really do make up "fake" people before decorating. We give them names, ages, jobs, hobbies, etc to help us decorate as they might.

La Lune Collection Decorating for kids is just so much fun! And we LOVE when clients come to us with unique ideas for custom pieces. Our friends at Weiss & Wirth Interior Design, Glenwood Springs, CO, commissioned this custom bunk bed with bookshelves for their most precious of customers, the sweet Adrien and Esme.
Check out this kids bunkbeds' progression, concept to completion:

lauraclaycomb I don't understand why people want to put chalk in their children's bedrooms - long exposure to chalk dust is NOT good for growing lungs, and if your child is asthmatic, it could be disastrous! Looks cool, but all those particles in the air... ?

aliturner87 What's the lovely tile flooring throughout?
Becky Harris It's a porcelain tile that looks like stone. Unfortunately because the client had already selected it herself, the pro did not know the exact product. Sorry!

Samantha Schoech I just killed the palm in the photo. If it can die, then I will kill it. but I'm getting better, I am.

newcs 3 things I've had good luck with (and I usually kill all houseplants): Aloe, spider plants and my new favorite are the mini orchids from Just Add Ice. I don't use ice since it damaged a leaf but this little plant from the grocery store has been going strong and blooming for a couple months now, even though I went away for 2 weeks. I just water it a little bit each weekend and don't do anything else.

nagoose The only plants I haven't killed are the plastic ones. The live ones that are still alive don't look nearly as good as the fakes, either looking sickly or near death. And I only get the "unkillable" ones!

I keep trying even after saying in despair to my husband as I recycle yet another plant I am just going to replace each one as they die with plastic ones. I definitely love plants to death. They don't last too long with me. Sigh.

    J. Peterson Garden Design I love the conversation here! I use one of these materials in nearly every design I install. And I'm learning something as well--I've never used the Klingstone product, but will look into now.

vixenhouse Does anybody have an idea what I can out on my gravel driveway, not too expensive? Looks bad! Little blue grey gravel, gets muddy and packs down, washes away. Thanks!
