almostjane - it does say 'oven mitts.' Maybe some use them for potholders too?

Summery - also forgot to add, 'about 1m square feet of storage space.' If I had all that stuff in my kitchen, I'd have no room for me. On the other hand, if you have all or most of this stuff, copy this list and add the price of each as part of your home inventory in case of disaster/insurance claims.

I would have to add a muddling stick so I can sit back with a proper Old Fashioned with all that work going on in the kitchen. Even though a fruit juicer and mortar and pestle were mentioned they just don't cut it for preparing specific drinks correctly.

Before reading the more dissenting comments I would never have thought of any of these elements as "inauthentic", save perhaps the more industrial pieces which I suppose are just not my style. I'm a born-and-bred suburbanite with no particular "roots" to speak of, so I wouldn't know what constitutes a "real" farmhouse apart from pictures and the one or two I've actually been in. For me the barn doors, feed sacks and wooden benches represent not so much a look that I want to sell to my guests but that sense of realness that you can't get from a factory in China. So what if feed-sack material once equated to poverty? It was something functional - not a nylon lookalike - that was made into something else that is functional. Like many here I also love interior barn doors - so much sturdier than the flimsy hollow things that afflict my native suburbia. I don't have livestock (yet) but already I have metal chickens and a rooster that are set out seasonally. Hopefully I'll have some real ones - and maybe even a small flock of sheep - once we build, move and have the space. I suppose for me this "look" is appealing because it represents what I've never had.

Great article Laura--thanks. The modern quilts made me smile. My 99 year old Grandmother is a prolific quilter. Just last month her comment to me was, "I'm getting modern" because she was making her first quilt with bold colors and loud designs. It was gorgeous--I wish I had a picture to upload.

For those that do love the barn door, here are some tips for measuring and installing if you want to get that look.

I think they can be trendy or truly heirlooms depending on your particular application.

I grew up in Kansas, and saw many paintings of cowboys, cows, horses, and barns. I left after school, and have lived many places, seen many styles, but feel there is always room for a cow. Here are just two of mine. My style is modern or contemporary, but you can do anything with a cow.

Oh and here is my cow art, Canadian artist Elizabeth Harris Nichols from her exhibit entitled "Not about Cows".

There's been some criticism in this thread that Houzz should have more idea books on reusing what you have, and repurposing. This didn't ring true for me, so for kicks and giggles I decided to find out how many there are. I searched, and was thrilled to find out that there are 755 "reuse" idea books, and 1004 "repurposing" idea books. Well done Houzz!
