That home in Palm Springs is beautiful! I would have loved to have the high roof lines like that.

Hanging Garden Trellises from grownsolutions.com can be hung in front of windows, for a natural air conditioning privacy screen effect, or in front of bare walls as a lovely focal point for otherwise difficult areas. They are also portable so you can move them out of harms way during inclement weather.

A couple of upholstered chairs, a coffee table or ottoman, end table, large area rug, and some color on pillows and window treatments would go a long way.

We have windows across the back of our house that look out to a wooded view. Even though we loose the view temporarily, we have to pull pleated style shades down in the late afternoon. The shades really help to control heat and protect furniture from UV rays. If I had to do it again, I'd look for remote control motorized shades. It sure would be nice to press a button and be done.

Beside controlling the light from strong sun, some sort of window covering is good at night because otherwise windows look like black holes.

Hunter Douglas has some really great options for light control window options. They have remote controls for the product, or you can download an app to an ipad. Their website has great pictures and product information.

The kitchen would still be 'traditional' even after changing the colors.

The changes you are proposing are so minor in difference to what exists that you really won't be able to notice anything was done. Go paint something else if you have the urge for a change. It's not worth doing anything to this kitchen since you're talking millimetere of change for quite a bit of $$.

I had a twin canopy bed that I'd drape blankets and sheets from the top of to make my own little tent that would stay up for days/weeks!

I think the room needs a little more color. When I get to work, I'll do a quick retouch to show you a couple ideas.

Okay, here are a few ideas. I think you have a nice looking room under way. I like the clean, simple vibe you have going. I'm not opposed to monochromatic rooms, but, in your case, I think you need a little color via an accent wall. And maybe something above the TV; however, I'm not convinced that's needed.

One more thing . . . I added crown molding in the photos above. I think it would really help to make your room stand out.

This room is gorgeous! I'd still suggest a couple of low rise plants or natural elements on the top of the book cases to continue the vision to the ceiling. I found that my eyes want more when I get to the top. A pop of green and/or yellow up there would be so charming.

Wow, this looks terrific! I really like the new paint, it kicks the room up a couple notches.
I think this looks just about complete, but I will add one more idea...antique piano lamps (I'm sorry, this will be my only suggestion that includes buying stuff!). The directional lighting on top of the bookcases kind of gets lost in the magnificent teal, and I was thinking some old brass with nice patina would look stunning against it. This would be one of those things that I would add to the back of my "hunting" list and just see if I happened to stumble across it. But again, you definitely don't need it; this room is looking pretty darn good!

I chose tile in our current home for the same reasons Angel described. I love hardwood and have a fair amount of it, but I just prefer never worrying about flooring in kitchens and entries. In my previous home, the kitchen wood took a bit of a beating and I hate the mess of having wood refinished.

I think the species of wood and the finish play a huge part in how the floor will look and wear over time. Although aesthetically I may have preferred a different species of wood or finish, we chose a red oak hardwood with a prominent grain to it and a satin finish close to the color of the wood itself so deep scratches wouldn't show. We are not a rough family! I have a dog breed with naturally long, hard nails, a teen who insists on chasing the dog, and a very messy husband who cooks and won't remove his shoes in the house. It's been 10 years and the floor just now needs to be refinished. Surprisingly, the kitchen floor doesn't look as worn as the doorways and entry. I would install this same floor again. It rarely looks dirty, even when it is filthy.

If you paint the screen, make sure you use a heat-resistant paint.
