@Steve Masley & @ PermaScapes - thanks so much for the very good information you provided me regarding troughs. The issue of the heat gives me pause...I had not thought about that. I live in Texas near Dallas and it gets very hot here in the summer. So, that may very well be my determining factor. Thanks again.

If one is built on a wooden deck, do I need any drainage for the bed?

My favorite childhood memory is from one summer at the lake. My family was staying at our cottage and one day, my father, who liked to wander in the woods, came back so exited. Everyone else was too busy doing their own thing, but me, as in character, was simply splashing my feet in the lake - sitting on the dock. I followed my dad, and he brought me to a place that was formerly swamp. Large trees, but no underbrush or plants--- simply a padded carpet of moss under the tree canopy. It was so beautiful, I can still see it to this day. I tried to find the moss room years after as an adult, but it wasn't there. It must have been a result of the climate conditions for that year, I'll never forget it though- it still exists vividly in my memories.

Bravo, Apartment 46 for the Home! Well put. We don't look at these pictures because we'd really like to live like the characters from Roseanne. We'd like to live in these beautiful houses. To dismiss this as "not a real home" is from someone who has a limited world view. No matter what style you like, or what size home you have or desire to have, beautiful will always be preferable to ugly, cozy will be better than generic, efficient trumps disorganized, spacious will be better than cramped and clean tops sloppy any day of the week. I'm a decorator (retired) and I don't consider a glue gun a decorating tool.

In regards to the bamboo can you winter it? Just wondering what zone would it be?

Victoran, make sure you boost the pots up off the ground with spacers (don't block the drain hole!), or move the pots every season. If the pots are resting on the ground, the tree roots will migrate up through the drain holes and into the pots. I was called out to troubleshoot a container garden that had 1/2-inch tree roots coming up through the bottom. They had been in the same place for a couple of years.

RollingPlanter.com. i like your ethos. Makes sense to have rolling containers until you know how much sun your favorite plants need.
