Farrow and Ball paints are beautiful. Even if you pay a bit more overall, the outcome is worth the extra cost.

I wholeheartedly agree with Thos. Baker, though I am biased as I have never used Dulux - you get fantastic depth or colour with F&B paint, so yes, shoshielias, I think worth it - and it goes on so well, excellent coverage

How are Houzzers using their Living and Dining Rooms, if they also have a Family Room? What are some of the ways those rooms could still be used traditionally, at times, but for other purposes the rest of the time? Is there special furniture that gas multi-purposes? What about if you have usual furniture in the rooms?

Karin Madgwick I agree that your bedroom is stunning. For all the people that can't understand this discussion - The world is so crazy we all agree, so when you come into your own home it should welcome and invite you. It sets you up to care about how you treat yourself. Crawling into a beautiful bed with all the pillows and fluff at the end of a rough day is just a pure pleasure of life. And it doesn't take much to get that luxury.

Now, back to the task. Emmeline, you are definitely on the right track. The lamps are perfectly scaled with the headboard and love the color of the wall. I like 3 euro pillow across the back, the two sleeping pillows and 1 or 2 smaller pillows. Personally, I coordinate the 3 euros with the duvet and the 2 smaller ones are personal statements (bright colors). No one can see my bed unless you walk into the room and everytime I'm in there I enjoy a deep breath knowing I'll be there soon!

Love the linen duvet, white sheets and faux fur pillows and throw!

I have two pillows, four shams (two brown and two white) and a decorative cowhide cushion. Some people may find that is a lot of pillows but it makes the bed look luxurious and people often comment that they want to jump into it!

I have 1000 count sheets in both brown and white so that I can play with the look, alternating the sheets and the shams to change it up.

I also have a brown coordinating coverlet that I use as a blanket for impromptu naps.

Great post, Laura! One material missing from your post is glass, which also can be quite tactile. Here is my SKLI pendant light, using hundreds of fused glass rods to make a texture reminiscent of wrinkled silk....

Another of my favorites is wool, especially Nepalese wool which I uses to explore texture and organic patterns in my VEGG rug:

Ive got black leather sofas. Yes, they do absorb the light and can look too 'solid'. Ive used lots of grey and silver, with glass and chrome coffee table, consol table and side tables. Lots of mirrored photo frames and mirrored framed art work. The walls are grey and carpet neutral, the curtains have horizontal stripe of greys and black with a pale grey roller blind. For a bit of extra 'bling' ive added a inch wide strip of silver sequin to the bottom of the blind.

E Latimer-agree with area rug comments. I would move ottoman to another area in the room ( maybe even remove it) to break up "the leather" look. Get an interesting coffee table to add texture and dimension to the room.

We have two German Shepherds and they certainly like to be part of the family. They sleep in the same room us at night. In their own beds though. They were both crate trained until they had learned the ways of our house. I think that a German Shepherd would not like, one bit, to be put out and isolated from the family at night.

Thank you Ruth, I just want everyone know that I am very respectful to other people and their pets. If I thought for one moment that my two boys would hurt anyone or another dog, they would not be permitted to run free. Digger doesn't even chase cats, he try's to make friends. I have had many people tell me what great dogs the boys are, that they go to their house and play with their dogs. Or the see them all over. One of the guys from the power company shares his lunch with them, the UPS guy knows them, one time at the vet's office a gentleman came in and ask about Digger. He said he sees him at Trillium(summer golf community) all the time, did not think Digger would ride in a car.
I do have a female that is keep inside. She protects my home. I can not trust her around other dogs or males of any age. She will not back down. She is kept on a leash until I reach my neighbors property or at night when everyone else is inside, I let her run, while I am outside, with her.

I had a dog attacked and died from a much large dog attack. I will not do that to another dog or person.

There is a book "The Secret Lives of Dogs". It gives in sight to Huskys and some dogs that are just roamers. My aunt had a dog that about once a month she would let run at night. She would let Bozo out in her back yard, he would jump the fence. The next morning, Bozo would be waiting by the back door. She lived in a very congest area. I have learned some dogs just need to run and roam. If you do not let them, they will find away. Dig under the fence, climb the fence, back out of their collars and away the go. I am just luck I live where I do.
