I would get rid of the honey oak. it's outdated which is exactly why we are currently redoing our cabinets. I have used java gel stain on these cabinets and the transformation is incredible! They become a beautiful espresso! Whether you go cream or dark ( with the gel stain) is a personal preference. White cabinets are very "in" right now and would go great with black granite if you have your heart set on that. There's a lot of great kitchen pictures on houzz. Take the time to look to see what both you and your husband like. Good luck!

Thanks for all advice! And I'm glad that we didn't actually hang the light upside down. My husband reminded me we hung it that way because of the crystals that hang down.

Margo:Lighting in the kitchen. Not a fan of the boob lights but our budget is tight. I wish we could install more recessed lighting. I have a beautiful oil bronzed (small 3 arm) chandelier that might look good centered over the island, but I haven't checked how hard that would be to wire. I also worry that the chandelier will make the lighting worse as the current fixtures are not very bright to begin with. Any suggestions are welcome. My husband can wire lights. He actually is handy but as he gets older he acts like he isn't handy! ;)
Thanks foxbrij for the name. I will check your tip out. Thanks
