S Squared Design

S Squared Design is about concocting designs that are innovative, modern and stunning. Being different in the design world is a great thing, and that is exactly what Suzanne strives for in every design she formulates. Her trademark “modern, stylish and functional” style is why her clients keep coming back for more. She unites pieces together in a way that are typically thought to be a little “off the wall” but clients appreciate the details she puts into each design.

Suzanne Suarez Maraia is passionate about well-designed spaces. At a young age she rearranged rooms in her parent’s home, more frequently than someone so young would typically do. As she grew up, she moved on to paint walls when her parents weren’t home, calling these “surprises” for her parents. Suzanne, a native Houstonian, attended the University of Houston where she studied interior design and architecture. There her love for interiors flourished into what now is, a design studio that is forward thinking and stunning. In the early years of Suzanne’s career, she worked in design showrooms and also for one of the nation’s top luxury home builders until she launched S Squared Design, and has not looked back since.

Suzanne is an allied member of ASID, and frequently attends local and national industry trade shows, so she can offer designs with the latest technology and design trends in mind. Suzanne works hard to establish and develop a relationship with each client, to help create enriching environments that impact people's everyday lives. She caters to your likes, needs, and wants while focusing on functionality and design to transform your space into what it truly should be.

S Squared Design Hello! I believe it is a personal preference, but I always do it to match the baseboards in my clients homes. This makes your trim seem more substantial and gives your floor a nicer, more finished look.

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders It is nice to match the baseboards, but takes more upkeep as it gets dinged a lot. I think it is a personal preference.

S Squared Design Hello! Maybe a home office? Think vertical storage. Do some open shelving and/or cabinets above , a desk surface below and a small, comfortable chair. Keeping most things off the floor will make it not seem cramped.

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I love this butlers pantry I found, and maybe have a small office space also. The kitchen is small, so adding extra for the kitchen would be great. Though I do feel it would be quite awkward getting back and forth between the kitchen and the "butlers pantry". Any other suggestions?

S Squared Design Hello there! I have put exotic hardwoods in a few clients homes and with any really wood the color is going to change with direct sunlight. That's the beauty of natural materials, it is the same with silk, cotton, or linen. With direct sun be aware of the time of day those areas get more sun than others. Adjust your shades accordingly. My client also has a great collection of oriental rugs and would move they around every month or so to avoid having harsh lines on their flooring. This has helped quite a bit. Even rearranging the furniture can help. Everyone that comes to their home loves the floor and it really does pop! that's a huge focus of their home. With any hardwood floor there is maintenance so keep that in mind. Hope this helps. Here is a photo of my clients floor.

Ironwood Builders All woods have some degree of photo-sensitivity. How much varies from species to species. Oak is not very photosensitive whereas cherry and maple are very much so. With exotic woods it is the same...Acacia and mahogany are not photosensitive while Tigerwood and Kuyrupayra are. Perhaps looking at flooring selections that appeal to you color wise and looking up the individual properties of each will help in your decision.

S Squared Design Hello there! Typically you don't want to hit your head on them if you lean over the island or something. So if you are tall the higher up the better.... at a minimum I would say 6' from floor(if you are taller than that do at least a few inches taller than you minimum). Comfortable would be 7'. Also take into consideration how tall your ceilings are. If you have 9' + ceiling height then do about 7'-9'. if you have under 9' ceiling I would do around 6'- 7'. I am assuming you have other task lighting so this is more of an accent, correct? Again it come down to what feels comfortable to you. Hope this helps!

S Squared Design Hi there! You have a little bit of a challenge on your hands. As nice as it is having a designated space for your TV is creates problems if that layout doesn't work for you and your lifestyle. I suggest maybe an interesting freestanding piece of furniture that will house all your components but the furniture its self is stylish. or you could go built in but have some contrast between other elements in the room. Go with a dark stain or reclaimed wood, it will bring a little warmth to your room and be a little more interesting than having everything a shade of beige. There are a few examples below. Hope that helps.

    A. Peltier Interiors I like a built-in but what if it was some sort of bar are and the V went above the fireplace. But these are details that need to be determined after you have done your layout of furniture.

leelee I would like to see you make it into a cabinet with shutter doors that you can accordian out of the way when your TV isn't in use. Think something like a closet with louvered doors. Inside shelves and a spot for the TV, XBox, DVD and cable box and speakers. I found a picture of what I'm talking about but it's too small to see. It's a houzz picture. Look under Popcorn, please:
