About me:
I am a creative soul...an artist. However I can't put together a room/house to save my life! Too many choices, too many ideas! What do they say, paralysis by analysis? (I think I said that incorrectly?) That's why when I found this advice section on Houzz, I was so happy! In the middle of the night, I can bounce ideas/ask for advice from people who enjoyed it. It's a good fit. :)
My favorite style:
Eclectic, modern, mixing old and new.

When they were living with us for a while, they put all white furniture in there. It still wasn't light enough...still claustrophobic for them. I don't blame them. If you are in that room, if you don't like that cozy feeling, that room can be very overwhelming.

I'd remove any heavy, dark furniture you can to storage. Removable wallpaper might do the trick. Try it on the back of the bookcase shelves for a start. Also have a serious discussion with the vendor about the feasibility of putting it over the paneling without damaging it. Here they've even put it on the ceiling.

Cabinet: true...didn't think about just taking it out and putting in a door. But since a hole is already there...thought maybe something fun. :)

How funny, we have to pay a tax on each trash bag. What I wouldn't give to bunya trash compactor. Can't get them in Europe at $-$$ and not at $$$$

Storymom, I know you want something fun, but I would consider how much use it will get. Remember, at some point, someone thought that a trash compactor would be "cool" too. :D If you don't have a definite need, you'll likely end up with something that is another waste of space. A bank of drawers, or another cabinet, will never be wasted, and always appreciated.

Would definitely not recommend painting over the wood.

Update: We put travertine in there...and hoped that my parents would be ok with the dark paneling. (so no changes to it) They lived with us/it for several month, but it was just too depressing being enclosed on 5 sides by dark wood...for my mom especially. So they got a little place of their own. But I think they are finding it a bit difficult. We have restarted...tentatively...talking about maybe moving back in. But since I know the dark wood is an issue, I've asked around. I got a suggestion I've never heard of: put up walls within the walls...drywall up for them to paint whatever colors they want. (I was thinking leaving the ceiling as is except put paper paneling inside the beams to lighten the ceiling.) IF they decide they do want to move in, we will do this. If not, maybe I will get to transform this into my studio. :) So it's glacier speed progress!
Thank you for all of your help and suggestions. (and I have no new pictures so didn't attach)
