These storage solutions don't need to be next to the oven, they can be any where in the kitchen. These are good ideas if you are looking for convince of location. Also, if you have a wall oven and a separate cook top heat would not be as much of an issue near the stove top. See example in this kitchen. You could easily store spices near the cooktop and have no worries of the heat source effecting their quality.

We used vinyl wood look planks in a rental property - it's not only beautiful and indestructible, but planks can be replaced if ever needed. We've used laminate in our own home for years - never had any problems with it at all and it's much more forgiving than any of the hard floor surfaces. Going green with cork would have been our first choice, but reviews indicate that cork fades in the sun - since our kitchen is very large and half of it gets the afternoon sun, we'd have ended up with a 2 tone floor. Not an option!

Those with custom-built homes ought to also know that some insurance companies use a computer spread-sheet called Xactimate to determine construction replacement costs. If your contractor does not use it, and most do not, you are in for months of hard negotiating. Xactimate is designed for tract-housing, not custom. The print-outs are a nightmare to review and expecting contractors to provide the kind of detail the program requires (27 nails, 16.5' of molding, etc) is overwhelming . Our home was damaged by a tree on June 29. We moved into temporary housing (covered by insurance) Oct 1 costing them $6k/month. As of now, we have a roof and replacement wall but are still about $17k short of enough to have a home again. Somehow, they'd rather pay for housing than sheetrock. We hope that, now the debris is gone and our contractor can see the full extent of needed repairs, we'll be able to convince insurance to increase the amount.
The annoying part is they are covering everything else: damaged furniture, clothing loss, furniture storage, rug cleaning...they've said yes to everything else--just not to the contractor's bid (which was the middle of the 3 we were asked to get.).
I cannot imagine handling an entire house loss and my heart goes out to those of you in Sandy-affected areas.

It is good to take insurance policy that covers the disaster recovery so that when it occurs you are secure previously and will able to safe you and your family members.

I am a designer and keep records for my clients for 10 years. I became an invaluable asset to one client when her house burned down. She had excellent insurance with total replacement-- but the games the insurance company played were unbelievable in this devastating time. I fought them the entire way. They kept trying to say items that were terribly smoke damaged and burned were usable. I was nice at first then started condemning things. They also kept changing the adjuster we were assigned so the entire process had to start from scratch. It took 2 years for the home to get rebuilt and for the client to be paid. This was a wake up call for my own home.

I don't have many things of value. My partner and cats are irreplaceable. So, I felt my mind wandering and looking at the pretty pictures. Did anyone notice that the child on the tree swing was swinging over gravel? Not only that, but maybe the swing's ropes just faded into the trees and weren't attached to anything? Well, houzz, someone was paying attention.

Thank you for this vital article on losing ones possessions.
Our house was burgled 15 years ago. I traveled for a living and had collected precious items from around the world including jewelry. Then four years ago my brothers condo burned, and he lost his life as well. Now I had all my belongings in a 2000 square foot private storage locker,( as I was moving), burgled. Everything, including photos, precious antiques , my mothers property, fathers property including his leftover inventory from his business and all my property was taken. Probably over 600 k's worth. I had 2 insurance policy's with a gap in the middle. The insurance co.is trying to prove the incident happened between policies! I had used half of your suggestions, but not all. I pray every one who reads this, realizes the importance of the advice in this article, and also have mega insurance on all your property. I have not much left to inventory, but even paper clips will be recorded and photographed!

Hi Alison -

I love your tireless commitment to educate all of us about the importance of preparation and use your horrible experience to help others. As a BC survivor, I do the same thing and feel like a broken record sometimes, but it's the message that we don't want to hear, but NEED TO and HAVE TO hear.

We have a "go box" with a handle and all of our important documents, including a backup drive for our computers (which actually is backed up). Worst case, if we have to grab one thing in a quick evacuation, that is it, no questions, no hesitation.

Now... I need to get out the camera and start taking pictures... thanks again!

Hugs, Holly
