Incorporating plants that attract pollinators makes a garden dynamic whether it's bees, moths, butterflies or hummingbirds, hours can be spent observing them fluttering and buzzing about the garden.

Deer in highly populated suburban areas are not afraid of motion. They don't even move when a car is coming directly towards them. They are very adaptable to their surroundings!

What a novel idea! And it makes perfect sense to look through this prism. It's going to take some real thought to come up with the true answer though.

Timely article. Its good to return to the original idea of house and home. Creating a inviting personal space is fun, but creating a home for living is more important. It is refreshing to read a piece about home as home and not a design show piece.

BY DESIGN Builders
As a design/build firm specializing in kitchen and bath renovations, we encounter clients who completely understand the importance of design (and paying for it to be done) and clients who have no understanding of how many details and specifications must be made for even a small bath renovation. It is our job to educate those who do not realize the importance of design and how it is necessary for the build portion to be done properly or to thank them for their inquiry and move on to the clients who do understand.

Ever been in a kitchen where the cabinet doors/drawers conflict (or worse, the refrigerator)? Ever have difficulty reaching a shower valve or worse, getting a cold blast of water trying to turn it on? Ever feel like the kitchen is hard to work in with more than one person? Ever encounter a hard to reach outlet for the hair dryer?

We put a lot of thought and planning into our designs. It is the reason we are BY DESIGN Builders, not "by accident" builders : )

Check this out. Just posted today, quite timely and spot on: http://www.nkba.org/nkbaconnect/14-08-22/How_Much_Does_An_Interior_Designer_Cost.aspx#.U_eL0UvF9Fz

I am a designer and keep records for my clients for 10 years. I became an invaluable asset to one client when her house burned down. She had excellent insurance with total replacement-- but the games the insurance company played were unbelievable in this devastating time. I fought them the entire way. They kept trying to say items that were terribly smoke damaged and burned were usable. I was nice at first then started condemning things. They also kept changing the adjuster we were assigned so the entire process had to start from scratch. It took 2 years for the home to get rebuilt and for the client to be paid. This was a wake up call for my own home.

Thank you for this vital article on losing ones possessions.
Our house was burgled 15 years ago. I traveled for a living and had collected precious items from around the world including jewelry. Then four years ago my brothers condo burned, and he lost his life as well. Now I had all my belongings in a 2000 square foot private storage locker,( as I was moving), burgled. Everything, including photos, precious antiques , my mothers property, fathers property including his leftover inventory from his business and all my property was taken. Probably over 600 k's worth. I had 2 insurance policy's with a gap in the middle. The insurance co.is trying to prove the incident happened between policies! I had used half of your suggestions, but not all. I pray every one who reads this, realizes the importance of the advice in this article, and also have mega insurance on all your property. I have not much left to inventory, but even paper clips will be recorded and photographed!

Hi Alison -

I love your tireless commitment to educate all of us about the importance of preparation and use your horrible experience to help others. As a BC survivor, I do the same thing and feel like a broken record sometimes, but it's the message that we don't want to hear, but NEED TO and HAVE TO hear.

We have a "go box" with a handle and all of our important documents, including a backup drive for our computers (which actually is backed up). Worst case, if we have to grab one thing in a quick evacuation, that is it, no questions, no hesitation.

Now... I need to get out the camera and start taking pictures... thanks again!

Hugs, Holly
