I am an interior designer specializing in kitchens, bathrooms, home libraries, offices, wine storage, custom closets and any room featuring built in furniture and millwork that requires particular attention to use and spatial planning and a proud recipient of a Best Of Houzz 2013 Award for customer satisfaction in the Remodeling catagory.
I like to think of decorating as creating an outfit for a room. Of course, it does have to be an outfit you will not mind wearing for a good, long while. Seriously, though, the care one takes to coordinate an outfit is quite similar to room decorating. Just because you “like it” doesn’t means it works! Too many accessories, more than one large bold pattern and colors that are not complimentary will take down even the best of the individual items being used. Cohesive design where each item has not only a purpose but is in proper scale and has a good relationship with the other items in the room, will make a room inviting no matter what the style. The selection of flooring, cabinetry, counters, backsplash, and wall color can really be done in any order as long as each element builds upon the last. Take into account colors and themes from adjoining rooms as well. This will help to create a flow in the home that really shows off a sense of style. Kitchens require special attention as plumbing and electric codes as well as appliance clearances all have to be taken into account while creating a visually pleasing, functional space. It is my opinion that a good ” kitchen designer” will guide you to find your style and showcase your unique treasures while creating that cohesion that makes a room really special.
Services Provided:
Kitchen and bath design, spatial planning, custom furniture design, color consultation and other design services relating to home renovation and new construction.
Areas Served:
New York Metropolitan Area and East End, Palm Beach, Orlando, Miami, Las Vegas, and New England

GreenBox Art + Culture This is a gorgeous foyer! We've got canvas wall decor in many different styles that will look fabulous in your entryway. We find that once you've found the perfect piece of artwork for your room, all the colors and accent choices are much easier to settle on. Any of Angelo Franco's artwork would look lovely in this room:
Or, feel free to spend some time looking through our website for loads more styles, themes, and color palettes http://www.greenboxart.com/store/. Here are a couple you may like: Mincing Mockingbird's bird art collection in a grouping http://www.greenboxart.com/store/?artist=495&dir=asc&order=name or a colorful punch from Stephanie Corfee http://www.greenboxart.com/store/canvas-wall-art-1.html?artist=368
Happy decorating! You're off to a beautiful start.

decoratemeplease I've been growing basil for years and my kids just eat the leaves right off the stem. However, over the past 5 years I've noticed that the basil is extremely bitter, no matter where I purchase it. It tastes great the first few weeks but then is completely inedible. Any suggestions?

Archevie Design As someone above mentioned, in really sunny places like Colorado, you'll have better luck giving basil some shade in the middle of the day.

Toni Sabatino Personally, I think that for the 2 color idea to be effective, the "accent" cabinets that are a different color need a visual separation. Like an island, or an armoire look that is taller and deeper than the adjoining pieces, or a row of wall cabinets... Something that is special and so deserving of special color treatment.

judyg I wouldn't paint; I would wallpaper. There are so many tones in the wood, I think choosing a one dimensional application for your walls will not do your furniture justice.
I would do grasscloth which gives that tone on tone effect naturally.

deb2010 Me and my 13 year old son have just made and planted a small raised bed. He rushes home from school to water his plants and we're going shopping for more plants at the weekend. We are both complete novices so we are learning together. And it is so nice to see him out in the fresh air rather than in front of the x-box!

Toni Sabatino Thanks for the question. The hood was custom fabricated using a Vent-A-Hood insert. The design was to create a contemporary styled mantle type hood using a sheetrock structure decorated with a custom stainless piece and glass tile.

Toni Sabatino Nice article. Hoods and vents can really make a statement. I created this idea book a while back to give my clients some ideas.

happycmpr Thank you to all who have commented on venting. This has been very informative. Now to find a competent HVAC person who hopefully understands about proper venting and return air and possibly locating the exhaust fan on the outside wall to reduce noise. At least now I am armed with enough info to ask the right questions. (Stanneal - I wish I lived in Oakland and could use your son, but alas, I am in Southern Cal.)

Orchard Hills Design and Construction, LLC its really important to make sure your hood/fan handles the amount of BTU's of the range below. we see too often clients raise the hood for the kitchen design only to find it no longer captures the vapors even if it is in the standard 30-36" height over the range.

calkelley best beach thingy ever - google sand anchor. It's a thing that screws into the sand and it has a tabletop which is something we use all the time! You can keep your drinks, glasses, books, etc out of the sand. It's also an umbrella stand.

marlene7241 My back yard right now feels so cold. I am so romantic and so creative. I just move to a new place but don't have the money to do what I vision doing. I love to entertain. love dinner parties, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres on a brick patio with fire place and sitting area.

imholmes You can get your garden in the condition you want if you establish a plan and work at it. It has taken my husband and I 18 years to transform a weedy and sun-scorched back yard into a Japanese Garden. We hired a landscape designer 18 years ago, and stuck with the plan, and it now looks wonderful. Don't give up. Consider your new garden a chance to start over in a new direction. I believe in planning and patience. A great garden is worth working for and waiting for.

jojo132 @Kim Gamel thank you, will try to source it now. We've had THE most wintery start to summer here in Ireland but today there's heat in the sun and it's finally beginning to feel like summer so all thoughts now are in the garden!

hgtv105 I like the article but you didn't give the names of the flowers you used in the first flower pot. I know that one of them is a petunia. Please give the names of the other flowers. And by-the-way, I love Moon Flowers too.

The steaming process naturally darkens the sugar compounds present in the plant to create a warm brown color without the use of dyes or stains. Bamboo is an extremely fast growing grass, reaching maturity in 5-7 years for sustainable harvesting. Considered a rapidly renewable resource, Bamboo stalks regenerate from the same root system within 3-7 years. During regeneration, the root system remains intact preventing soil erosion. Bamboo is an extremely stable, dense and strong material that remains very color stable with age and sunlight exposure.
I think Bamboo Veneers look fabulous in contemporary designs like this one… Mandi @ Dura
