I just did one for a client which I wish I had myself. What made it so wonderful is can be operated by a knee push instead of leaving dirty fingerprints. It's not just a touch latch; the bins actually come all the way out when the door is opened. Most kitchen cabinet companies are aware of it and sell it to you. Good luck.

I am buying a brick house at the end of the month - see attached pictures. It has tremendous potential - so many windows! I have a lot of ideas for the interior, but I can't decide what colors to paint the trim. It being a brick house, there's not much to paint, and I hate to paint brick. (Don't go by the landscaping because it obviously needs to be redone.) I was thinking of refreshing the trim with a light off-white and the siding a sage green - what do you think?

Dear Charmean,

Thank you so much. I love your suggestion and will use ice formations on the walls. The wallboard is new, so I will use a try a pearl finish first to see if that will help with light reflection...unless you think not.

We just had the old, original 90amp. furnace replaced with a 15amp. furnace and a heat pump.

The installer suggested we not use the expensive (DENSE) furnace filters that need to be changed only every six months. He said the "cheaper" (LESS DENSE) filters actually work better; they just need to be changed more often. Has to do with circulation.

Maintenance delayed is money thrown away.

Never delay these maintenance tips! If you can't afford to hire it done and aren't able to do it yourself; you need to rethink your home purchase. Homebuying is not for everyone, and that's not a bad thing, Check the Roof! get up there often, at least once a year to check for broken, lifting or missing shingles along with your valley and flashing seals. Look on line for videos and images of what your shingle types looks like when it is ready to go. I am always amazed when watching "Love it or List it" and the homeowner is shocked, shocked to find out the roof needs major help.

Upgrade the quality wherever possible. So if you replace the AC/heater, go with the best, most efficient model you can afford.

Oh and it might not be common in your area to have a sprinkler system but, if your new house has it, you gotta check the heads on every zone. Yard Geysers can be expensive.

Thank you Susan for your excelent lesson on bookshelves arrangement and for showing us your pretty bookcase. I've tourned my china cabinet into a bookcase for my old books, here you can see the result. I could'nt choose which books to put there because my purpose was to provide a storage place for an encyclopedia and a dictionary collection. After read your article I turned some books around to avoid a bored composition and I think it works. I would be grateful if you - or the participants in this dialogue - give me your opinion or sugestion to improve mi bookcase because these books are important so they have a long and a bit sad history in the family and I have to live with them. In fact, I love them but it is no easy to include them in a mediterranean style decor.
From Lisbon my best regards.

This may have been discussed to death but colors have to be looked at through all seasons and all times of the day. A paint chip looked at under the horrible lighting in the store may or nor be lovely in your home. You won't know that until you have looked at it in your home under all circumstances. It takes time and patience, I know, but despite everything you have heard it costs lots of money and time to paint a room. Lighting also plays a huge part. Please, take your time. If you don't, you could end up painting your room again, and again, and again or wondering why it doesn't ever look like you dreamed it would. Accessorizing will be a breeze if you have painted the room the right color/shade.

Since I am more into things being comfortable and a bit less formal and I use my throw pretty much daily so I throw it and it works for me. btw I have a throw on the bed too! @Vera Kolpakova:
You are not alone. What do people not understand "book case"? If you want to display collectibles, by all means, do so. If you buy/collect books, display them - in bookcases for the most part. If you have a library (or can fit enough shelves in your house to house your books), do so! And do it proudly. If you are not a reader or book collector, that's ok also. But please, do not buy "books-by-the-yard" to faux decorate a room. You will only look/sound stupid if you can't answer an;y questions about your "library". There is really nothing wrong about not being a book lover. There is a lot wrong about pretending to be a book lover. Books are not decor. Books are books. There is a vast difference and if you are pretending to impress a book lover/collector, you will look the fool.

we added knee walls / pony walls in between our living and dining rooms to create a bit of separation, to define the spaces, and to make the dining room a bit more "formal". my husband built them and I requested that they also be able to be used for storage so, we DIY'ed these custom doors for it. we made them out of wood, painted aluminum screens, and backed them with mirrors. the mirror is not extremely noticeable, but it does add just a bit of shine. eventually, I will post a tutorial on my blog exacting how we did it here: http://sharonnamisha.blogspot.com/
