Great humour there, both the author and scarbowcow! I would've loved to see the shingles..the one that taunts you!

My decorating mistake lies in buying glassy, glassy furniture pre-kids. I thought they would be a breeze to look after.

Cocking my head like a crow, I used to wipe the glasstopped table to ensure no streaks. But once my older one decided to show his true destructive colours, a floral plastic tarp came over it..and stays to this day, 6y on. That glass underneath would've gone back to its silicon origins otherwise!

As a newlywed, I was excited to decorate our first house. It was a little two-bedroom bungalow and I diligently studied all the decorating magazines (and even books) to get ideas for our new home. The decorating mags said to select a wallpaper or fabric that you just loved and match the colors in the room to that. Unfortunately, there were already carpet and flooring that we couldn't afford to replace, so I was stuck with those colors. I decided to use wallpaper to tie the different elements together and I was on a limited budget. I chose some really AWFUL wallpapers that suited the colors of the carpet/flooring and my budget. The one I chose for the living room, had this weird Egyptian theme and so I painted a big, sofa-sized canvas with the sun rising over a pyramid (I was something of an amateur painter in those days). The room was disturbing. (What can I give as an excuse...it was the early 70s?) :-}

Tried for years to have children, expensive medical bills, no responses from adoption agencies. Bought a very attractive white sofa. That did the trick -- two little boys in less than one year.

Painted the kitchen a beautiful blue and adjoining family room yellow. Loved the look and contrast until my 5 year old daughter came in singing Ikea Ikea...

I saw one of those strange-looking ergonomic wheeled chairs on clearance at the office supply store, the kind where you have to look at it a couple of times to figure out which of your body parts go where.

I took it home and when I went to sit down on it, it scooted across the floor with me half-way on and half-way off -- no wonder it was so inexpensive. I was afraid I'd get hurt on the thing so I put it out at the curb and one of my neighbors scarfed it up. It was out at the curb in front of her house a couple of days later.

We sell a similar looking product that's actually thermoplastic. It's DIY- and budget-friendly, and impervious to water, impact and stains. Here's a link to the product: http://backsplashideas.com/diamond-plate, but we also offer numerous other styles and finishes. I've attached some images of a couple others.
