Jamie Mason I wish I had seen this before my husband and I visited Kyoto last June, but we did pretty well on our own hiring an English-speaking driver/guide whom we found at the train station. (We had taken a side trip by train while spending 2 weeks in Tokyo.) Kyoto is definitely as presented: underwhelming on the surface, but wonderful once you begin exploring. It was, in fact, the highlight of our trip to Japan. I highly recommend branching out from American hotels, though. You will face language barriers, but it's worth it to have a more unique experience. We stayed at The Screen and loved it. We chose a suite, which was fabulous and large (welcome after spending a few days in a tiny place in Tokyo!), but I suspect even their smaller rooms would be large on style. The front desk was so beautiful, I photographed it. Two months later, when we decided (spur of the moment - occupational hazard of Realtors) to buy a house that needed renovation, we used it as inspiration for our powder room. Here are photos of the front desk and our powder room, before and after.
