I can see the uses for someone with mobility issues, or in a house with an upstairs fireplace/stove, but I certainly wouldn't install the tacky one pictured under the poll. Maybe a cleverly-hidden one. I've always wanted a dumbwaiter, though.

We actually have a space that was built into our home when we designed it, just in case one of our parents needs to move in when they are older and need to be cared for.

Oh wow, that door is brilliant, bluenan! Is it a custom?

That's our plan, Barnhart Gallery. We have some others, along with a very few original artifacts (attendance lists, receipts) that came with the place. Our town is so small that it doesn't have a museum or historical society, but the Town Historian knows they are here and is okay with it. At any rate people keep stopping by to read the historic marker out front (located just out of frame in the contemporary photo) so we just invite them in to have a look around anyway.

Oh, and we do plan to match the pattern of the old windows, though with updated materials as it's bloody cold up here - we're in the Adirondacks and there's still 3 feet of snow in the yard.

If you click on the Rivervine Design under the picture they talk about the door.

Hello! Here is a photo of Bronson Pinchot's kitchen -- someone mentioned it above in the thread. I've been in his houses and have witnessed part of the transformations and can tell you, not only are the designs lovely, they're incredibly user-friendly. The shelf (in this photo far left) acting as a refrigerator door thrilled me to pieces -- there's no indication a refrigerator hides behind it. The antique pottery is affixed. Just genius!

Does anyone else find it funny that the designer's name on this project is mcwall?

Who will be using the space? Is it for the two of you, or a rental, or a sale?

I'd go for the desk myself, but I'm not really a clothes person. Is there anyplace to install a drop-down desk that could be used when needed and put away when not?

Many thanks to all you Houzzers! With your input, a straw poll at work and influence from me the Great Silverback has accepted the storage over desk space idea. As many of you have said laptops etc rule and we can always provide a fold out table for anyone who wants one. Next part of the project is the "Secret Sink" in the kitchen space. I may even get bold and put up some pictures!!

Love my house, it's my creative outlet. Working in banking, it's really great to come home to place hugs me when I walk through the door. I've only been in a year so there is still much to do but I'm loving the journey

New laundry room vanity. I found the old sewing machine and refinished it. The sink and sewing machine were pretty cheap the taps were almost the same price as the other two but I loved the way it turned out:)

Are the zombies trying to get in, or get out? Either way I'd recommend copious quantities of gin, cigarettes and cat food.
