If the tub you are going to purchase has a tile-in flange or is able to go wall to wall, than your 8'5" dimension should work. Without seeing the plumbing layout, I would have to assume the plumbing is going on the opposite wall of the shower not the dividing wall.
If you are in the framing stages, you could possibly reduce the thickness of the kneewall dividing the shower and tub using as little as a 1 1/2" stud wall. Once the wall is completely cover with backerboard and tile it will have a total width of 3.5", adding an additional 2.5" to the shower area. I would also suggest a kneewall height of at least 24"h to allow for a nice amount of tile to surround the tub area.

I've attached a similar project I have just completed with 24"h kneewall.
