of the garden. The designers of yesteryear used paving, walls, pergolas and rills to create these bones. Today we are more likely to use decking, gravel and raised beds. In this yard the strong blocks of gravel and the formal water feature hold the design together.
A courtyard garden is another classic
Japanese garden. This one has the standard design elements — gravel, water, accent tree — but with a contemporary twist. Rather than a natural-looking pond and a soft-edge gravel patio, usually the hallmarks of a Japanese garden, straight edges border the tiered water feature and patio. The accent tree is

row a garden off the bath. You don't need to have a huge yard to create a unique garden feature. A narrow stretch of yard on the side of a house could be planted with bamboo for privacy, and opened up to the bath with a wall of glass. For more flexible privacy, consider adding sliding shoji screens.
