100% clueless about any construction, so I had no idea about any wood types, nor did I know doug fir is an option for cabinets. Happy winter. :)
The cabinets and trim in this house are vertical grain douglas fir with a clear finish.
Hi Mark, beautiful work. Thank you so much for the info. (I also picked vertical grain doug fir for all my doors in a recent whole-house remodel, and we're very happy with the results. Your door looks familiar, so I asked. I chose Inox
considered importing wood from Japan but eventually learned that Hinoki is very similar to Douglas Fir. We ended up designing the mouldings and having them fabricated locally out of vertical grain Douglas Fir. - Mark.

Is this floor douglas fir? If so what is the stain/ seal/finish used?
The door is doug fir but the floor is bleached vertical grain bamboo, factory finish, semi-gloss
Can I use a water base stain instead of an oil finish on the fir door?
takes and holds stain well; beautiful and quite uniform in vertical grain cuts. VG fir is particularly "millable" and holds fine detail well (see the attached custom Simpson Door example). Fir is photo-sensitive and will redden with age and fade in direct sunlight - so keep sunlight exposure in mind
VG Douglas fir is an excellent species for entry doors! The "hardest of the softwoods" is tough and durable; good screw-holding characteristics; resinous - not to the same extent as cedar, etc - but certainly Doug fir is a strong choice for exterior applications; takes

and beautiful as well. I used reclaimed fir cabinets in my own home and I used Osmo Polyx Oil (clear, not tinted) on them. The reclaimed, old-growth fir tends to go to a darker orange when it is exposed to UV, while younger (new-growth), more open-grained fir stays a bit blonder.

We used a satin laquer/conversion varnish on the fir cabinets above. It offered a nice matte finish that was still protective. The fir veneer was on the lighter blond side and my clients wanted to preserve that as much as possible (knowing that the fir WILL darken over time when exposed to UV). Honestly
