lidineen: it was one of those jobsite decisions, but I believe I used 6' for each cord which gave more than enough extra to wind around the steel bar a few times at the various heights.

Exactly, tung oil is the way to go. You can keep your finish up with tung oil as well. Just wipe more on as needed when the finish gets damaged or dry. If using a pure tung oil, cut it at least 50% with a solvent. See realmilkpaint.com for good instructions. They sell a pure citrus solvent that is

panels look like they have been painted before they have been put onto the wall. The wood looks to me a bit rough so the paint will end up looking vintage or used. Sometimes if you have used to much paint you can take a bit off by using sandpaper. If you try on a piece of wood first you will see its easy
