You won't need a drain as long as the surface water sheds off correctly away from house. We didn't have a basement for this project so we had no worries of water infiltration

Below the steps there is a diving wall between the spa and pool. Water just barely flows thru. To reduce the time it takes to heat the spa in the winter, we let the water level fall low so that no water "escapes" to the pool.
