Did you add drains to these water troughs or do they come with a drain?

We are about to add troughs using them in the same way and are curious why you are adding the fabric

It looks like they have a self watering system already. You could bury a hose, and run it up through the bottom of these troughs. I think
used Liquid Nail to glue on four sets of dollies per trough. We set all our tender pots in these troughs -- huge ficus trees, bouganvilla, plumerias, etc
