to the this pic (off white maple with chocolate glaze). I saw a glass back splash on here yesterday and can't find it now but it was glass tile with mixes of copper and pewter'stainless in color. Thought of it over the sink and stove area but then thought should it cover beneath the cabinet area completely

As a general rule, I prefer to use an engineered stone on one surface and a natural stone on the other rather than mixing two natural stone countertops in the same room--but if I were using two natural stones, I would want them to contrast each other in color and texture
the faucet in this photo is an example of Waterstone's antique pewter finish. What's nice about antique finishes in traditional spaces is that they mix well, I think, with other antique finishes--so you can have, for example, antique bronze, copper, and pewter in one room: the antiquing sort of blends

How do you mix different sofas in the living room? I’m so used to seeing matching pairs.
Although I agree with bepsf, I think that it is perfectly acceptable to mix and match sofas in one seating area. Like all things, there is a very fine line between perfection and disaster. Here are a few examples of mixed sofas that I think are quite successful. http://www.houzz.com/photos/85592
Personally, I'd only mix sofas in separate seating areas within a very large room - and they both would have to relate to one another as well as the overall decor.... ...but
