"My 1778 home just feels good inside," says Laura. "The entire house is made out of ancient wood, floor to ceiling. Maybe that has something to do with it, or just lots of happy ghosts."A home this old comes with some quirks of yesteryear; for example, a small door used exclusively for bringing coffins

old laundry (no longer required) was also closed off and a new cavity slider entry was cut into the pantry from the kitchen to provide easy and functional access. A new landing was built to bring the storage area of the pantry up to the same level as the kitchen. A “pass through” was created to connect
such a neutral pallet. An example of this is the marbled tiled splashback. Two variations of the tiles (honed and antique brushed) were sourced and cut to size and randomly placed in a brickwork pattern to create visual interest and be less predictable at eye level. The end result. The resulting kitchen
dining room, providing easy and functional access to the utility room. The exposed rafters and existing ceiling in both the new kitchen and pantry areas were sheeted in to allow for a new and more effective and functional lighting layout. The conversion of the laundry to allow for a separate pantry

such a spectacle. For a more refined method of cutting, a sturdy wood cutting board and quality bread knife will do the job best. The board shown here features a wooden lip that helps anchor it to the countertop for more precise cuts (and less chance of cutting yourself).
This Z-shaped cutting board adds a warm, organic touch to this sleek kitchen. The front ridge keeps the board in place, and the back keeps the knife steady while cutting; the raised back also lets you sweep chopped food into a pan or bowl in one fell swoop.

Most important is the introduction of an oversized work island with a sink, wine refrigerator, and built-in walnut cutting board. the cutting board has a slot for bread crumbs that lead to a small drawer with a removable tray for disposing the crumbs. love that cutting board! where is it from? Stunning kitchen!
Where can I get the cutting board on the island?
Is this a refinished floor? If not, what kind of wood, stain, & finish
There is not much of an overhang, only about an inch. The posts are 4"x4" pilasters. The Island is not used as an 'eat-in' counter. Just a work area.
The opposite side has a second sink (With the main sink out of view to the right)... There is a second dishwasher next to the island sink. The cutting board (out of Walnut) has a slot for crumbs. That slot opens into a small drawer (that is visible in the photo) that has a lift-out liner for emptying

How did you get the wood weathered look on the concrete wall?
How did you get the wood weathered look on the concrete walls? Thanks !
Have you ever tried this with rough cut cedar? I have been having problems with bug holes in the face after curing. Does using pine of fir help to alleviate this problem?
The wood look was achieved by actually attaching rough cut 2x4's to our concrete forms- (but you can actually
have this same pattern- it is more expensive to do it that way especially if it is a one time use...but the forms are at www.formliners.com Rough Cut 2x4's works great- and turns out nice as you can see. Thanks!

intend on cutting that rustic loaf with the chef's knife?
counter butcher block cutting boards. I have four of them. When I bought the house they were warped. A carpenter reglued, patched and sanded them. I've been caring for them with Howard Wood Block Conditioner. Food Grade Mineral Oil & Natural Waxes (Home Depot). Actually I don't cut on them. I put a thin
thin plastic cutting mat down on top. It feels different to chop on plastic on wood vs on top of a hard counter top. That I can easily wash. Otherwise the board attracts mice in the fall/winter. I use the boards a lot for extra space. They almost double my counter top usable space in times of need.
There are lots of websites that give information about preparing and maintaining cutting boards. Hope this helps. http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-oil-and-maintain-a-wooden-cutting-board-lessons-from- the-kitchn-195642
