I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure these are Wax Myrtle trees (Myrica cerifera). Note the twisted trunks with smooth grey bark. Look carefully at the leaves at the top center. Then check the leaves at this site: http://www.ncwildlife.org/WISe/WISePlan

am sure that there is a similar variety of sorts that comes from the your coastal areas. The boots will eventually shed off revealing a more smooth trunk. I prefer to plant them with the boots still attached. Good luck!
