А я читала информацию о том, что супы, борщи, и горячие блюда с мясом и рыбой нельзя быстро остужать. И как теперь быть? Искать третье мнение?

The layout looks fine, just finishes need updating. Consider removing that wall between shower and vanity, it will really open up the space.

I think it is top heavy. Larger pieces on the bottom. I would just display all the blue and white and maybe just 3 other items in the mix. Create groups of 3 - 5 , 2 . The large items on a shelf of their own.

Please keep it, it's fabulous. I would just design the kitchen around it. The brick would be great as a backsplash.

Consider buying new doors for your cabinets that look more updated, like a Shaker style. Then paint and add a backsplash if possible. No need to demo the cabinets.

This kitchen was remodeled with new doors and paint, plus new backsplash. All the cabinets are old.

BTW - I know it is considered out of style, but I think the Corian looks clean, bright, and the edge is a nice detail.

I can't really make out what the floor looks like. I do notice that is seems like a very nice house, so I don't think over improving it is an issue.

Good point made about the selections having too much going on to pair with the busy oak. I would look for a very simple countertop, without the multiple colors and movement.

Sorry I did not monitor the discussion better! Life has a way of interfering with remodels!

Wow. What thoughtful comments. I'm liking your ideas, libradesigneye...

We are looking at an anodized aluminum or bronze color garage door with translucent glass. Also thought of industrial type awnings (in the vein of what libradesigneye suggested in wood...but in metal.

Maybe lose the cutout windows in the corners upstairs but shift the upstairs window so it curves around the corner of the house towards the front door. (This suggested by a friend).

Frankly anything would be an improvement. We are definitely thinking of making the lower windows taller with matching casement windows flanking a fixed window in the middle.

I think the cutouts are what make the awning layouts work well - like the metal for longevity - and you can always do it in a core-ten finish (though this may run when it rains onto the stucco - so anodized aluminum would be preferable) walls are very useful in a living space - so unless the room is dark and you need more natural light - that would be a huge expense without a big payback that might make the room worse.

I love everything in the room! However, I believe the room would be best accentuated if you would add white-painted crown molding around the wall/ceiling juncture of the room. In keeping with this, I would suggest you add a white-painted chair rail and white-painted bead board to create wainscoting around the room to break up the large amount of plain, light grey wall space. I love the purple curtains, but they might look better divided into upper and lower tiers on the upper and lower parts of the window so that they would add some fullness and softness to the room. I believe the slimmer kind of chandelier goes better with the large horse painting because the slimmer chandelier allows a person to see the painting more clearly.

Try to find an English arm chair to go with your 8' sofa. Dimensions you should consider are 28-30" w x 30-32" d. Try to find chairs that have a similar height as your sofa, usually 33-35" at the back. Here is the style and size I am referring to...

Russell, I have tried it without the chairs and find it looks bare, and also a love seat which we are currently using now but it's almost too much sofa. Granted it's not a very nice love seat, but it works for now. I have a large family and two almost 6' boys still growing! Aggie, I thought the same thing about the height of the wing backs because my kitchen island over looks that room and I might be obstructing a very nice site line. I like your suggestion about the barrel back. I'm going to have to give that some thought because you just introduced a great new idea. Thanks for helping me through this design process I appreciate all your ideas.

Gray and Walter, I looked at RH they have a linen english rolled arm chair similar to my sofas it is very nice and I love RH. Only thing is I don't find the height of the arm comfortable. It is to low and I find you can't rest your arm on it or lean into it. The same is with the sofa but to be honest for the most part when we sit on that sofa everyone lies down on it full bodied, it's heaven! We can't do that with the arm chairs, any suggestions?

Paneling can be whitewashed and it looks great if done well. Find the best painter you can and whitewash the wood paneling and update the wall above paneling with a fresh color or wallpaper.

I think painting would be an immediate update, but if you're hesitant, then other updates would be to change the light fixture, and update the floor, or just add a nice area rug, and add a cover to the radiator. Here's just one example... Just search on houzz for radiator cover photos.
http://houzz.com/photos/1736799
Then add tall stationary curtains on each side of the cover from ceiling to floor, with a soft roman shade for the window. You could do these first, then decide if you want to take the step of whitewashing, if you're hesitant. I guess a lot depends on your style and the style of the rest of the house. I'll bet it has more nice woodwork!

I'm in coastal south, and horsetail, which looks great in Asian gardens, is much more invasive and quicker growing than bamboo. It does die back in winter, but comes back with a vengeance. Suggest using both in large pots.

Chiara, looking at the kitchen, it looks like it's in the UK. Am I right? If you have the money, one thing I saw on houzz somewhere (think the U.S. site) was that the owner moved her wall cupboards higher up the wall. She had longer wall cupboards so she put them up to the ceiling. I was really surprised how much it opened up the counter/worktop space and kitchen.

If that isn't an attractive option (or affordable), I'd start with grout paint (if you are in the UK, Lakeland does this). This will really spruce up the wall tiles, make them look really vivid. New silicone and mastic at the joint between worktop and tiles, around the sink. Also - new more "period" taps. It looks like a 1950s/60s kitchen - maybe chrome with some ceramic bits. Sink looks great.

I love the radiator - from the picture it looks like a lovely column one. Think about a soft metallic paint - like a pewter tone. Turn it into a feature and please don't cover it up - maybe a shelf but the idea of a lovely picture is great. Or a mirror to bounce light around.

My only radical suggestion is to consider getting rid of the cupboards/open fronted ones (except for one housing the boiler!) above the sink and get the shelves reconfigured. I would only have two there and have the lowest one higher than it is now and the second shelf between the current positions for shelves two and three. I think it would open it up massively. Finally - the cupboard knobs - maybe consider those pull ones like upside down cups - period-appropriate. Can't paste a link from my iPad. Will do later from desktop.

FYI, I ordered the Gardenia lamp through Houzz and it's poorly made. I went online and checked reviews and lo and behold, many people rated it poorly because of construction. Unfortunately,it is not easy to return through Houzz as I'm still waiting for directions on how to return this defective lamp and we've had multiple emails. Should have ordered through Amazon!
The bedroom is shaping up. The blue seems bright but I think once I get the pictures and some curtains, it will all come together. Thanks to all.

Sun beats up wood. I would do an out-door rated stain with as much poly on top as you can. We got talked into an interior stain with poly but it didn't hold up at all and door looks bad. Neighbor who is a builder did a stain and 15 coats of marine-grade varnish on top. I thought he was nuts but 3 years in his door looks fantastic and mine is looking at a re-do.

The layout of your kitchen cabinets looks fairly basic. If you don't have a problem with the layout, then consider replacing the doors only with an updated detail. A fresh paint job and new doors will save a ton of money vs. replacing all the cabinets. For countertops, I would suggest granite. There are so many colors and it's very low maintenance. Hope that helps. Charmean Neithart

This console table needs a lamp and a piece of art hanging over it. My suggestion would be to take the decorative iron panels down. It's very busy and not giving you the impact you need. Take a look...

It looks like one lamp would work, art, and some accessories. Hope that helps. Charmean Neithart

Sorry, your picture shows barely the top of the table. Suggest you remove the scrolly wall decor.

Hi! If you are wanting to keep all of the artwork around the table, I would suggest a nice vase and flowers to go in the middle. Here are a few options for you:

My answer would be wallpaper. I love installing wallpaper in a dining room. There are so many wonderful patterns and it really changes a room dramatically.

Definitely need some wall art pieces on those walls. It very empty at the moment and needs some colour to lift the space up a bit. Try this ... http://www.atchconcepts.com/canvas.html

Try Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore for that warm gray, leave the fireplace as is.

I personally think that in order to modernize the fireplace it will (at the least) need to be painted a bright, flat white. if you can spare the money, I would suggest adding some thin glass tiles in a staggered pattern. A grey/white/clear pallet would look great with the grey you mention.

Agree! A light, warm gray would work! How about a shade lighter on the fireplace with a few different width stripes (2-5") in colors from your rug around the fireplace ! Piece of art - !

TV's over a fireplace can be a huge problem solver. It also allows for dual function which is necessary in some homes. TV's can be concealed in many ways. One of my favorites is the VisionArt system, TV behind art. Have a look...

Well, it is certainly a better idea than all the other cover-ups I've seen, but AFAIC, the TV is STILL too high up

Position of the TV would remain the same if it was covered up or not. If the issue is that it is too high in either case then it can be used in conjunction with the down and out mount, where you can pull the TV out and drop it down over the mantle!

Mixing finishes is fine, but they should blend. It still requires thought and eye for color to mix things well. It's really like cooking, certain flavors enhance one another. I mix finishes all the time.

I'm looking for some advice on this issue. I generally like things to match, but I'm having a hard time deciding what would look best in my new construction home. It is a very open design with the living, dining, kitchen, and breakfast nook all visible at once. The kitchen faucets, pulls, and knobs will be satin nickel with stainless steel appliances. The part I am struggling with is the lighting. I would possibly like to use ORB for the flush lighting in the dining and the living room fan because I have a dark brown leather couch and a few ORB wall decorations, but I'm not sure it would work well with the 2 hanging pendants and a chandelier in the breakfast nook visible. Should all be nickel, just all lighting be ORB, or is it okay to have them different in different "rooms"?

I think that ORB is different enough that it could work. What metal is in the hanging pendants and chandelier? That might influence your choice.

Most of my metal is polished brass (high end from the 1960s) but for my family room lamps I choose ORB because I have a lot of brown in the room and I didn't want more shiny metal. The chandelier over the dining table in that room is white plexiglass and the shades on the ORB lamps are also white.

I would paint the brick because the siding to brick transition is too dramatic. It's cutting the house in half. Try a warm white or soft gray color on siding and brick with a classic black on the shutters.

My MIL house was whitewashed brick with gray shutters...easy maintenance...trim for windows, soffits, etc. was not bright white, but more of something that blended with the washed brick. There was a color that I remember she liked called Cottonwood...NO clue maker etc.
