Carlsbad is a city of about 110,000 residents, located in Northern San Diego County, 90 minutes from Los Angeles and 30 minutes from San Diego. Roughly 40 square miles, the city is approaching build out, but maintains a charming beach town feel. The core purpose of the City of Carlsbad's Community and Economic Development Department is "to build and sustain an extraordinary community." The department consists of 6 divisions: Planning; Land Development Engineering; Building; Housing and Neighborhood Services; Economic Development; and Development Services. Staff from these divisions are responsible for managing all land use, including Carlsbad's 3 lagoons, 25 parks, 50 miles of hiking trails and nearly 7 miles of coastline. The only north San Diego County city with an approved Habitat Management Plan, Carlsbad works with state and federal agencies to protect critical wildlife and sensitive species. You can visit our website to find additional information about each of the divisions and ongoing projects.
The City of Carlsbad now has a new customer service model to save people time and money when submitting new development applications. All new applications for Planning, Land Development Engineering and Building require an appointment. Resubmittals for Planning and Land Development Engineering also need an appointment.
