Paint Color For open kitchen/living room with lots of Cherrywood

last modified: 11 years ago
I've sampled quite a few colors but not finding anything that seems to work well with all the cherry wood in these rooms. We are not up for the expense to paint the kitchen cabinets. We would be open to painting the mantle and bookcase. The kitchen and living room all open up to one another. Initially, I wanted a gray, something to bring the space up to date and look more modern. I attached a picture in the comments of the samples we tried: SW Mindful Gray, SW Amazing Gray, or warn beige SW Pavillion Beige. I really need some expert advice!

Cool gray or a cool coffee or taupe. Get the yellow undertones out of there..... too much.

Hi! How about BM Beach Glass? It's a beautiful soft gray, with blue undertones. I'd paint the trim around fireplace and the bookcase Bavarian Cream.(but that's just me, love painted wood!) Get some colorful pillows and a throw for the LR, maybe an area rug, as well? - I think your kitchen is beautiful, but has a lot of wood. I'd put a runner in front of the desk area and refrigerator. Take some cabinet doors off, set up a nice display of your dishes and glasses. That will bring some more textures and color in there. Good luck! Can't wait to see the "AFTERS"!!

I imagine green with grey under tones to add color and contrast...Historic Green from Miller Paint is a good choice. It's warm and barring the name, a contemporary and fresh color. Select a few accent pillows and/or a large potted plant in a decorator pot will add to the room...perhaps glazed burgundy to match your cherrywood.

I usually pick artwork I like or fabric and pull a color I love out of it. Grey and beige too boring. Of course I am also not a slave to what is trending. I pick what I love. I live here and I want to LOVE coming home. And most everyone that visits really likes it too. Don't be afraid to go more bold. Paint is not that expensive and is easily redone.

I see by the little table near the fireplace you have small children? I see there are pink chairs ... you need some stimulating color to invite joy into your home. Enhance the neutrals, quit the blues, greens and grays ... what are the colours of your favorite clothing? What clothing do your children gravitate to? What makes you feel good, what makes you feel refreshed and full of joy? Tell me and maybe I can give you some ideas.

I have Behr Garden Wall in my den and it would work great with your wood tones. It's between gray and khaki, with a bit of green undertone, which is a perfect complement to the reds in your wood. http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/730D-4

You have received many good suggestions. Consider dark golden tans, or take a look at BM Camel or BM Carmel Corn, both deep golden colors. Something of this nature would also set off your lovely cherry wood nicely.

This is not an easy floor plan to decorate but I would try placing the large sofa facing the fire place, lounge chair under the mirror, a floor lamp on that right corner and an area rug to give the living room some definition. The wall in the end, (fire place) I would paint in a bit darker shade.... some taupe linen draperies all the way to the ceiling, would make this room look a bit more cozy.

too bad the wood floor is running the wrong way...extending wood with a colorful area rug would be nice. Then you could pick up a color from the rug for the walls. I guess you could still do a rug on rug in the LR and go from there too.

A rich dark gray like Benjamim Moore's stone 2112-40 would be nice. Then use sulfur yellow accents (pillows, lamps, window treatments, etc).

Please listen to " Perfectly You" . You have to get out of the beige mode. Your kitchen is nice. Beach glass for sure!!

Take a look at SW6164 Svelte Sage, SW6165 Connected Gray, SW6249 Storm Cloud or SW6255 Morning Fog. Do not be afraid to go a bit darker as it gives a more dramitic look to the room. Add a throw or accent pillows in prints with the color you paint to carry the color through the room and tie it together. The colors you showed are too weak and wash out on the walls. Whatever shade you select, carry those colors in accents in your kitchen. Colors should flow from room to room in a home to give it continuity. Good luck!

Go bold and bright! I had all tan and sand colors, makes everything pop when I went with high color contrast. Makes me feel HAPPY!

And then also here's a pic of how I took the yellow (Sherwin Williams, HONEYBEE) into the kitchen so it pulls into the kitchen area and makes the space cohesive. I love it so much, I am going to take it in the hallways too and more accent walls!

Pick the color that makes you feel relaxed. Don't be afraid. Don't paint that gorgeous cherry wood. Your furniture and carpet is neutral. If you like blues, try a soft blue/gray. If you like greens, try a soft sage. Check out the color visualizer from Benjamin Moore. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/rooms-by-color

Come home from the rush of the day to rooms that are retreats. Notice colors in stores and restaurants that make you feel calm and then surround yourself with that color.

Your paint color is fine! My first thought is to add some fabric window treatments, with great color and some pillows to your sofa. Add some great colorful books on your coffee table and have someone rearrange your bookshelf so it flows. Frames maybe should match, etc. And I agree...paint your trim and bookshelf white and somehow frame your tV so the shelf and wall and fireplace look symmetrical....or just paint that entire wall and trim white for now. I would pull that couch away from the wall and use it to divide your room from the kitchen so you can actually focus on your focal point...the tv and fireplace. Add some wallpaper to the back of the bookshelf (after you paint it to match your window trim) that compliments the window treatments . If you add window treatments, then add artwork on opposing wall. The mirror is reflecting the white window shade right now. No one wants to see that twice. Also, you might want to add different color counter stools. And a complementing desk chair....something with fabric or color because there is so much wood and DARK in that kitchen. These are all simple changes that can be relatively inexpensive. And you can do yourself...And you can always add a complementing window treatment in your breakfast area or above your kitchen sink. The picture may not be doing your kitchen justice. It just looks so DARK!!!

The problem is your walls, couch, and carpet are all essentially the same color. Paint the wall that the couch is on the same color as your cherry wood work and leave the rest of the walls as they are - it will look fabulous! I recommend building off what you already have rather than introducing another color that either adds to the color count in the room or continues to get lost in the neutral-ness of the room. I think this will bring both balance and interest to the room.

    What I would do....
Paint fireplace & bookshelves white. Then paint walls a richer color rather than gray or beige. Your furniture is light so the room would flourish with tad of color. Nothing strange or drastic but maybe a nice classy green... not too dark to darken room but just enough to pop it. Then buy inexpensive accents to bring out rest of room... pillows to compliment wall paint that will pop the couch, just spray paint the lamp base to pop it a complimenting color, and Kirklands has awesome wall art reasonable to add to walls if still feel need more after all else is completed. Currently right now everything is relatively the same color and just a tad of color without lots of expense will make that room look awesome! Don't worry about the kitchen... one day down the road if still want to paint cabinets go for it but kitchen is fine now. One project at a time is always best!!! nidk09 you have a beautiful home so have fun and don't stress in the 'facelift' process. Blessings to you nidk09!

Too beige and brown........get rid of the red/brown color on the feature wall. Paint ALL the walls a pale blue/green - Valspar's Tranquility - is a good one. Trade out the pillows on the couch for deep teal or a teal/gold pattern. A few touches of color placed in the built in next to the fireplace also.

Lulworth Blue. It looks amazing with wood. Then accent with yellow

With ask that wood, go with the blue green suggestions. I've always played it safe with neutrals but it is so boring. You will tire if it sooner.

If your cabinets and woodwork are in good shape, I would not paint them. My preference is for natural wood. We painted our living room/dining room a seafoamy green, with some accents of color two shades darker. It works well with all of the wood we have and is very peaceful. It looks like you have enough lights that you can stand something more intense than beige, so go for it. Go with what makes YOU happy.

I would absolutely paint the bookshelf in the white trim color, and maybe the mantle, but the mantle could stay cherry to coordinate with the kitchen and work equally well. fill your shelves with more solid items to make sure that they don't look cluttery...use books! stack some library style, others one-atop-another....this will calm the arrangement of the shelves and create some needed texture. do yourself a favor and punch a hole behind the tv and snake the wires through the wall and out another small hole at the plug. flip the sofa so it floats and faces the tv/FP and place a sofa table, writing desk or chest of drawers behind the sofa with that great lamp and a few accessories and adjust the placement of the chair. an area rug would define the LR seating area nicely and will pull together the palette nicely and will cozy up the space instantly! this really space NEEDS SOME COLOR. it is such a great space but lacks any color or personality. I'd either go with a deeper richer neutral or a muted grayed down shade of soft blue that has a little green in the base, to prevent it from looking too baby-blue. this will instantly brighten up the entire room! then add some more of the blue with a medium to deep range of muted blue (or darker-than-wall-color) pillows and some large scaled wall art (mat and frame some great art prints...check out art.com...I always have luck there!). finally, replace the utilitarian looking mini-blinds on the window with inexpensive matchstick, bamboo or woven grass shades which will add a warm earthy element and some texture. then hang simple, straight hanging curtain panels beside the windows in either a shade of white or in the pillow color....or a pattern with both. this space has soooooo much potential!! bring touches of the color into the kitch with art, linens, area rugs and accessories to create a nice flow. have some fun with it and keep us posted! i would love to see what you do here!! :)

    Now for something entirely different...

Please don't paint the wood. You'll be sorry. Choose a deep saturated colour that changes with the daylight. I love colours that change during the day. It looks happy in the daytime and warm at night. Seems like a fresh coat of paint every day. Harmonious by Behr is one of those colours but many will do that.

If you like the current color, then keep it. Install a wide crown molding in both rooms and paint it white like the rest of your trim. Crown molding always make any color on the walls pop out. If you like your neutral furnishings then accessorize them with some added colored pillows and a contrasting throw blanket. Place a good sized tall decorative lamp to the left of the sofa. Place some ornate or colorful pottery on your bookshelves and some small glass vases on your mantle. Place an area rug in the kitchen that has the same colors as you accessorize with in the living room. This rug would break up the monotony of the cabinet and floor colors in the kitchen and also tie the two rooms together. Good Luck!

Whatever you do, choose your fabrics for pillows, etc., and area rugs first and then choose your paint. Always choose your paint last.

What I miss most in this duo kitchen family room is texture and pattern. I would not introduce any more wood or cloth. Leather chairs in the kitchen and maybe add a couple glass doors in the kitchen cabinets. You could add pattern with the paint. Pinstripe pattern in the paint is simple and could bring some interest. Some dimension to the fireplace and bookshelves would be nice too. Mix it up a little.

Keep the colors dark and match your walls to your mantle/surround, not the other way around! Remember your Fireplace is often the first thing people see when looking into a room!

Check out our Ideabooks, maybe a certain style will give you that inspiration you are looking for!

This is all pretty neutral but the texture and mix is interesting. Not loud but has metal leather, cloth and textures. Very modern.

Finding the perfect gray is hard. We looked at so many colors before agreeing on revere pewter. Keep testing out paint to see what works well with your lighting.

I really love revere pewter because depending on the light it looks gray or beige. Works well with a variety of colors.

I would probably paint your bookcase white as well as the fireplace to get that up to date feel, plus gray really pops against the white.

Just thought of a couple great colors to use. You have everything so neutral in there, you do need to bring in some other color, but not too overwhelming. I did one kitchen where everything was beige or neutral and we did the wall in Roseburg, from Ace Hardware paint. You can get the formulas from Ace and get it mixed in the brand you prefer. http://www.myperfectcolor.com/en/color/71092_Ace-176-B-Roseburg. Another one along these lines is Sherwin Williams Grapy http://www.myperfectcolor.com/en/color/286208_Sherwin-Williams-SW7629-Grapy I just used this as accent wall in an office that was all brown wood, beige carpet and beige and white chairs. Adds some warmth and color but not over the top. You can bring in some brighter jewel tones as accents. I think I have a picture.
