An architect is the person to start with. He/she will draw the plans and probably be able to provide you with 3D drawings as well. Before the plans are finalized it would be good to bring in your interior designer in case they would like to propose any important changes. interior designer is the one who will help to help you create the look you want in terms of building materials, finishes, etc. He/she will be able to advise you on the interior and exterior of your house. Thank you Rebecca, I have been panicked about this whole reno, since my brother in law was helping us get started (he is a contractor) but has yet to provide us with any plans. It has been 3 months and we are no closer to starting. Annette

Yes, an architect is the person to start with.......... A contractor will build what the architect designs.

Look on houzz.com for a local "Pro" / architect in your area and then make sure that you call their references and see their work and make sure that you feel comfortable with them....

A good architect will help you with a wonderful remodel........

Your brother-in-law (the contractor) should be able to get you plans through someone he works with - if he can't - then take it upon yourself to find an architect. Sometimes a structural engineer can do sufficient plans but an architect will have a more creative vision.
