I also went with 18" tiles in the kitchen and laundry for the same reasons Rhonda said. The tile joins the hallway/living room hardwood nicely. I might try for a 24" tile if you go with tile. I had hardwood in a kitchen previously. I cook nearly every night and it took a beating from water drips.

You can get tile that looks like hardwood now. Coordinate it with the hardwood you select. Best of both worlds!

I have 13" porcelain tile, installed on a diagonal, in my kitchen, laundry room and powder bath. It's worry free. HW is in foyer, hallway and formal rooms.

I've always liked both. I tell my customers who want wood flooring that of course it will dent or scratch (despite what warranties are sometimes pitched). If you take care of the wood floor, it can wear well. Tile is so durable it is unreal. My only two points I tell people about tile are: 1) if you drop a plate or glass cup, it will likely break. 2) Changing the color of tile in a kitchen will in most cases require full replacement., where hardwood in most cases can be refinished unless the veneer is too thin, which happens with some engineered.
