The ends of the pergola beams are held off of the roof with custom stainless steel "T" shaped clips (similar to roof snow guards), that are fastened and flashed to the roof. The top end of each clip was mortised into the beam, plugged, sanded and painted. The beam end is held off and spaced approx. ½" above the finished red cedar shingle. This gives the effect that the beam looks as if it is penetrating through.

Would this concept work on an asphalt shingle roof as well? I have been struggeling with a way to deal with two different roof heights on an inside corner for a pergola design without having to go the route of an extremely expensive roofline alteration. Are the custom "T" clips similar to the Simpson concealed joist (CJ) hanger?
