Have you considered an option D? It would be a combo of A & B. As a designer I don't recommend having the hazard of your major appliances right next to your main door way. If you were to put your refrigerator to to the left of the range with a minimum 18" cabinet/countertop in-between it would allow for traffic flow to go around the kitchen without interfering with the person who is cooking. It will also allow for more counter-space to the right of the sink which is valuable workspace.

ps if you do this, you may want to put the dishwasher to the right of the sink so that you can avoid the appliances interfering with each other.

The only drawback I've noticed is that the passageway is now only 34". If I reduce the cabinet between the range and fridge from 18" to 15", I can gain a few more inches.

This feels much better. I agree with having equal space from the corner, this should be equal to the walking space you have at the island. (not knowing your cabinet company) I'm assuming you are putting in a blind-corner cabinet to the right of the range. See if whatever storage mechanism you are using can go into a 39" base cabinet instead of 42"
