I really like wide planks. (Of course, that's not what I have in my home.) :)

What is the width of the room

Rebecca, The room is 16' wide x 27' long. Lots of light on the long side because there are 5 - 7' panels of glass. Emily I would choose the wide plank too, but I fear it might clash with the narrow brick. I hoped someone mIght offer insight to that. Maybe it would be a great contrast?

Your room is quite wide so I would suggest not going with a narrow board- 2 1/4- it will be a very busy look & it does tend to give a dated look. If you are going with a solid product 3 1/2 would be as wide as I would suggest. A wide plank would suit the size of the room as well, but I would suggest an engineered product only-it's more stable. You may want to have a look @ strand / verticle bamboo. This look should pull together the narrow brick with your med. or wide plank floor.

Eutree - Ha! The point is I like YOUR style!!!! There are so many benefits to wide planks, and I especially love the look with, oh I don't know what it's called, sort of fake nails? The big wood circles at the ends of the planks. The thinner boards are so 1965 (the year my house was built!). I hope that made sense, it's still o'dark early in California.

:-) yes the "face nailing" of planks is very old school. Ive seen both real and fake ones applied to modern floors. Whats really neat is the Brass face nails! Thank you.

Wide planks look really nice, however, in old ranch style homes 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" wide planks were traditionally used. If you can replace all the flooring, you should be able to update to a wider plank.

Which is more expensive to install? Wide or narrow?

Depends completely on the installer.
