I just bought a new rug for my living space

When I saw this photo I felt better about putting a smaller rug in a larger space with none of the furniture on it. Looks great! Is there a "rule of thumb" on size of rug vs. room?

Thanks! I tend to think there are no "rules" and just go with my gut. (Professionals might say otherwise, ha ha) For this room, I have so much going on already, I thought that a larger rug might be overwhelming, plus this one was cheaper since I could buy fewer Flor tiles.
