Living Room: Gray walls and tan furniture...does it work?

We have a lot of brown/tan (with golden undertones, not chocolate brown) upholstered furniture for the living room. I'd like to paint our large open-concept family/living/dining room area either Edgecomb Gray or Stonington Gray. We have a traditional style taste but also a causal lifestyle with three small kids. Would this gray walls and tan furniture work together? Usually I see a darker, chocolate color brown for furniture with gray walls.

I'm not sure those grays will work for you.

I say NO... Stick with your tan color and colors that complement your tan.
You'll end up liking your wall color and hating your furnishings.

Right now we have tan/beige walls and the same color furniture. We are kinda "over it" with all the tan, so we thought the gray walls would help. What Gray or other wall color would you suggest then?

I saw this pic here on Houzz and thought it looked okay here...

It is still not my favorite combination, sorry.

Well I am obviously on the fence about it since I made this post. So what would you recommend then? A "Greige"? Or what are your few favorite wall color choices for tan and brown furniture? Ours is darker brown than the pic above, but it does have the golden-tan undertones to it.

I would LOVE to get some wall color ideas!
We are building a new house so we don't want to get new furniture right away due to finances (and we have three kids 6 and under as well!) Here is my couch and an accent chair. I have a love seat that matches the couch, and a second chair exactly like this one. I also have a third accent chair that's currently in our master bedroom, but it is the same general color as the accent chair pictured.

Oops, somehow the other pic didn't get added. We also have a dark brown leather recliner chair not pictured.

Here's another pic I found that I thought maybe looked good, but I really don't know...

The real test of color comes when you get in the house, and I wouldn't start buying anything till you see how the light affects the furniture you have. Is all your furniture the same color? You might want to consider some craigslist buying and selling. We like rooms that are monochromatic; monotonous not so much.

I don't plan to buy any new furniture, but I do need to know what wall color we are going with because it is being painted before we move in.
Our couch and love seat are matching, we have two matching chairs (the pics I linked) plus one similar accent chair and a dark brown leather recliner. I agree with what you're saying, but I don't know how to get there.

Some grays to consider. You can paint sample boards and move them around in the house. Look at them at different times of day. Ultimately, since you're not living there yet, it's going to be a guess, but I would definitely do samples first before having the whole place painted. Gives you a better shot at getting it right.

Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray, and Stonington Gray are the three grays I have already bought samples of. Are you saying they would be grays that WOULD work with my tan/brown furniture then?
Yeah, I think the colors you have in mind might work quite well. I don't think edgecomb gray would work with gold undertones (you mentioned gold undertones), but I'm not seeing that in your furniture.

Tans and greys can definitely go together. There is a tasteful way to make any color combination work. There are also warm greys that you should consider if you're not so sure. You can always use textures, accessories, arts, etc. to tie the tans into the grey and make it all cohesive.

Love to see the results. I am in the same boat. Think I am going with Revere Pewter.

We just moved and painted our living room SW Canvas Tan. We hadn't shopped for furniture yet, but the walls were mint green and had to be changed asap. If you look at Houzz images for this color, I was impressed by how it ranged from gray to beige depending on the setting and light. I picked it because my floors are quite brown but I have a gray stone fireplace. The couch I found is gray, and I am optimistic about the pairing (though the couch hasn't arrived yet, so we shall see).

We had a similar predicament in our basement. We have neutral colored furniture. With the help of our color consultant from Sherwin Williams, we chose to go with a grey wall color with a brown undertone. It was called twilight grey (0054) in a matte finish. We really love the cozy atmosphere that it has helped us create. Good luck !

What did you end up using? I'm having Revere Pewter put on the walls and have a tan-gold sofa, navy chairs. I'm hoping it looks great! Would love to hear your feelings.
