Not at all. Whatever I buy our local Kroger affiliate usually comes with bugs, especially flowers so they end up being eaten within days of being transplanted.

One thing my husband says you need to do is to really break up the root ball good instead of just taking it out of the pot and sticking it in the ground.

Tease the roots away from the rootball. Check your planting depth. Not too deep or too high. Create a water well around them and keep them well watered until established. Mulch. No fertilizer for 2 weeks, and then only time release or slow release organics for perennials or shrubs. You can do liquid ferts for annuals at half strength, but 2x as often as the label recommends. And be sure you are planting the plants in the proper sun and soil types. No hostas in full sun and roses in full shade, etc. I buy raggedy plants off of the Lowes discount cart all the time and rarely lose any.
