Bathroom sink with a linear drain: is it practical? Pros and cons?

Just starting to think about bathroom re-do and had never heard of a linear drain. Googled extensively but have not found discussions about linear sink drains. Opinions?

    Susan,

These are quite common in commercial applications and are migrating to the residential side with the addition of new products. We have specified them several times with no issue in both porcelain and concrete as well as floor drains completed in tile. They add a very clean contemporary line to the project.

    Best of luck,

The sink must be designed for a lineal drain. It isn't something that you just purchase and install.

I have made a couple of these sinks of different lengths its all pieced together with quartz the result is a rather expensive yet unique vanity. The drain however is custom built per measures in stainless steel its a trough that is glued on to the under side the water flows down the quartz through the slot and in to the trough with a drain pipe in the middle. I never had any feedback from designers but my expectations were it would start to smell bad real soon and would be difficult to clean as you cant access the stainless part of the sink.

Ah ha! I had a feeling these types of drains were going to be an issue in residential applications. I don't even like not being able to access the overflow area of a standard sink. I do the best I can as it is, by cleaning in that area with a teeny test tube brush and mild bleach solution, but the linear drains? Yikes! Unless the manufacturer of the linear drain sink made it possible to fairly easily detach the linear catch/drain pan from the sink itself for de-stinking and de-scumming purposes, (and I can't see that happening), well, your bathroom would most certainly end up smelling very gross, very soon. Any manufacturer want to weigh in on this?
How about residential owners? I could be way off. In fact, I HOPE I'm way off, because I REALLY want one! How do y'all keep these things "sniff test" clean?

Cleaning the yuckies out of a single center drain is gross not sure I would want that my self it looks cool but looks aren’t everything and stinky drain would kill any love I had for it.

Flighttrainer, did you find a way to clean it?

I'm not sure if linear drain for a sink is any different from shower floor linear drains. Assuming they are the same, check out this post: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5493551/linear-drain-cleaning.

Compared to regular sink drains, cleaning linear drain may be more work. I'm assuming linear drain doesn't have a stopper mechanism to fill water up in sink like normal drain (plus faucet) contraptions do, or if they do, wonder how they work.

Does anyone know where to purchase the linear drains / plumbing system for a custom made porcelain vanity? I can only find the linear shower drains which have a rectangle line, rather than a single line for a basin... thanks appreciate any help.
