I was thinking the same thing at one time. Lowes & Home Depot have those "plastic tin ceiling tiles" for back splashes. They told me it wasn't recommended that you put it by the stove. It probably depends on how you cook and if it is with gas or electric. Gas would probably be less safe. I'd watch my toaster oven by it also.
On the other hand I had wallpaper behind my stove as a backsplash for years and it worked out well. ( I papered over an ugly tile with a special backing paper & glue.)
There are also places that make tin ceiling panels which can be used as backsplashes- you can get all sorts of colors and samples to see if they work for you. Shop around, sorry, but I forget the company I contacted.

Hopefully this comment isn't coming too late to be of assistance - I've been having the same trouble with sourcing faux tin backsplash in Canada. I did find a couple of websites, though:

I think the product is pretty tough - I would be somewhat leery about using it behind the slide-in style of stove ie. no "back" piece on the stove to shield the wall from direct heat.
