How are Houzzers feeling about non design threads on Houzz?

last modified: 11 years ago
There's been some chaos between Houzzers lately and several threads are being "reported". I've been wondering how people are feeling about the level of chatting on Houzz. Do you like threads devoted to friends chatting or do you feel Houzz isn't the right forum for that? There is the "Other" category, where I'm placing this thread. Do you think this "Other" category is a fine place for friends to chat about things not related to design? As someone who's enjoyed Houzz for quite some time, I'm curious how others are feeling.

So weird. I've just received an email notification on this thread and missed an awful lot of chat. Not that I would have contributed much, but I so love reading. All I can come up with is the profundity that we're all human. Be kind, as the lovely CS Lewis said: "When you have reached your own room, be kind to those who have chosen different doors and to those who are still in the hall. "

In other words, relax. I truly believe that the only sin is cruelty.

Rina ..I never know which door tooooo open ....Always stuck in the hallway but once...... I have opened the door ...in the hope .....it's the right one ....

It never is !! well if we all opened the right door ....the room would be very full .......I never slam the door behind me ...always holding it open for others tooooo go through ....

make of that what you will ....my doors always open....kindness breeds kindness ....ignorance is sometimes bliss ....as I have not read all the comments here ......

..just my silly take on it ....

but yes .well said ...CS Lewis .(Rina)

:-) I think it quite likely there's no door marked "act normal".

    only a tardis one

I have just taken this in. Probably not, but did anyone see a silent movie on TCM last night called "The Man Who Got Slapped"? Near the beginning -- he didn't deserve the cruelty done to him, but he allowed a warping to happen in his mind, and he made a life afterward that allowed more "slapping" as often happens. When we allow that masochism, it will also hurt others.... weird and deep movie. One 'take' for me: take care of one's own recovery!!... may it be.

I think the houzz discussions should be kept to topics around home design and construction. It's a great professional site, where people in the industry and people who are looking for experts in the home design industry can connect to create homes. Other discussions should be kept for other social media sites.

Euro....I understand where you're coming from, but it seems there is something for everyone on Houzz. Those who want to stick to business can certainly find enough threads where such is the case. And, other threads which have blossomed into "chat" threads are plentiful as well. It seems to me that it is the host - or OP - who makes the call and determines the direction his/her dilemma will take.

Happy thanksgiving everyone, and if you are in America, remember to opt out and give everyone a holiday!

I find them hilarious and enjoy the "off topic" chats when I can find them.

Ivy, you can find them in Other.

Chooky... I thought I'd just read thru this thread, rarely get time (still haven't) and I find that in Oz you call flip flops thongs? Uh, what about the OTHER thongs? (Saw a bikini that was all thong with strategically placed beads, showed it to hubby who said, Ouch. For whom? I asked him. For her, he said, those beads look so uncomfortable. So did the thongs... pieces of string really. Gah.

Ha, ha, our thongs are on our feet, we are right, the rest of the world need to see the light.

I remember, in FL we used to wear thongs on our feet, til the ucky thongs came in a while back. i remember my mom always had a problem saying it too. german hard time with th, hmmm, wonder it that is why i named my son what i did. lol

What i like about houzz and the people here is that most are intelligent and can speak on many things. There are a few of those negative nellies that pop in saying awful negative things or totally off topic, just to be mean. but they are not the rule and generally end up vanishing at some point. Plus there are team efforts on so many things, but when lost or not getting the point you can get up and leave. I do not like any of social media sites, never have. But houzz just seems so different. in 24 hours, I have learned some unusual foods; an incredible, awe inspiring virtual chorus; traded stories on diy gone bad; traded a few jokes; shared a few pillows; discussed books. Really what it is all about to me. Makes me thankful.

--for 'havingfun' and all the houzzers: thank you and happy holidays! I have had a good time with family.

    Yeah ever!

Some still say it, but none have answered what do you call those awful things?

    We call it a G-string.

Margo, you really did not think i was going to bring it up did you? It has been going since Jan. long before I got here.

    Naughty, naughty having. :)

i was so good yesterday, gotta cut loose a little and everyone is so fraught-that is a word that can only be used on houzz!

Hey ok chook - hi havingfun.

Having- Having- it was not brought up for fraught, it was brought up as an observance. I must admit that I am not so sure it was by accident, but nonetheless, I found it rather amusing. SO, with that said, and in the spirit of the season, I do wish we could all come full circle and come home to roost;))...

I laughed when I read your comment Margo! It caused me to go back and look at the topic of the thread and the OP and I really laughed when I found it to be an old thread of mine:)))) I've just been seeing updates appear in my list and hadn't remembered the initial thread at all. I'm completely lost about some of the recent comments because I haven't been following closely and I get lost easily, lol! But, I do appreciate the irony as you mentioned.

You know what they say "laughter is the best medicine", even if it means laughing at ourselves. The mere fact that we can laugh and continue posting on Houzz amongst fellow Houzzers with whom we have differences is in its self quite a merit. I have been on this ride for going on 3 years, and when Houzz is going great there is no better high! So, help yourself to another dose of medicine, turn up the music, and let's dance!

Margo, I just spent a few minutes reviewing the early parts of this thread. Whoa, it was quite a bunch of strong opinions including tons of my comments. Glad I'm much less worked up about everything nearly a year later:))))))

Hi Lynne. I'm with you. Only a few threads now and then. Hope your Thanksgiving was enjoyable.

Sorry am so pokey - have been trying to get ready for closing on my new house. Thanksgiving was really enjoyable -- it was just immediate family & fun to get together with Sis and Mom and Dad. I had cooking duty, which I enjoyed immensely (love to cook for a group, dislike cooking for 1). Hope your holiday was a lovely one, LB.

Well, anne, i think the answer is most houzzers have no problem with off topic conversations!

Wow-- interesting thread--never saw similar ones on gardenweb, this seems to have more busybodies with too much free time who think they have to run the place and call out anyone who doesn't follow Their own brand of rules.

    Interesting..... lol

I think when threads go off topic it's fine. After all we got together because we are interested it renovation and creative design. Getting rid of clutter. And upgrading dowdy kitchens and horrid bathrooms. Nice to tell people and get advice and opinions. If a little family history creeps in, who cares? often it's related to the topic.

Always fun to run into an old thread and see who is still around;) Where have the years gone? Seems like yesterday that I discovered this site and could not believe the laughter that it brought me. Good times!
